7 Beauty Brands That Nailed Inclusivity in 2017

Fenty Beauty

From the moment we first saw ads for Rihanna‘s highly anticipated Fenty Beauty line, we knew it would be a hit, much like everything else the record-breaking singer touches. But beyond her obvious star power, what makes the brand so groundbreaking is its effortless approach to ensuring that men and women of all shades and backgrounds are included. From dark skinned beauties like Duckie Thot to fair faces like Selena Forrest, the gamut of products–including a 40-shade foundation range–prove that there’s truly something for everyone.

Milk Makeup

The makeup brand, whose roll-on products have made it easier than ever to apply powder and cream formulas, has always done a good job of showcasing a wide range of beauty through its ads. But this year, it certainly upped the ante with its “Blur the Lines” campaign. The project, done in collaboration with the grooming site Very Good Light, was created to celebrate gender fluidity and freedom through cosmetics. It featured a slew of beautiful (and of course, diverse) faces, including Avie Acosta, Madeleine Vintback and Eddy LeRoy.

In September, the affordable beauty brand ventured into new territory by casting a model with albinism in a makeup campaign; a first-ever in the cosmetics industry. Diandra Forrest, who has long been a regular on and off the runway, was the face of the “Breaking Beauty” collection, with the intention of deconstructing the mainstream ideals that encourage us to hide what makes us unique. In the accompanying ads, she was joined by two other groundbreaking women; Valentijn de Hingh, a transgender model, DJ, and writer, and Mama Cāx, a cancer survivor and amputee activist.

This widely lauded beauty brand, known for its customizable coverage, championed diversity this fall with the “Nude is Not Beige” campaign. Besides promoting its best-selling Natural Finish Foundation, the monumental moment also marked the launch of the brand’s online shade-matcher, which allows customers to have their skin tone analyzed and paired with their best foundation shade. But overall, the initiative provided a much-needed reminder that any and every shade of skin is beautiful.

Orly

We’re well acquainted with the set of harmful ingredients often found in nail polishes, but this year, Orly took things a step further for its Muslim customers. The popular brand teamed up with the website Muslim Girl to release a six-piece collection of nail colors, all halal-certified and water-permeable. It marked the first time a beauty brand had created something that specifically caters to Muslim women. And besides the safe ingredients, the colors are beautiful, too.

Make Up For Ever

In March, a slew of standout beauties, including “Melanin Goddess” Khoudia Diop and blogger Jessica Wang, teamed up for Make Up For Ever’s “Blend In, Stand Out” campaign. The brand, whose 40-shade range Ultra HD Foundation is a cult favorite, brought these influencers together to “create their own rules of diversity and inspire others to do the same. The ads, which featured each person individually and as a collection, proved that the brand’s products are inclusive of all shades and styles.

Glossier

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Our favorite millennial pink brand has never made a big deal out of featuring women of all shapes and sizes. 2017 was no different. Besides the debut of its first-ever fragrance “Glossier You,” the start-up brand also launched a breathtaking campaign for its Body Hero products, which featured a diverse range of body types; from the then-pregnant Olympian Swin Cash Canal to model Paloma Elsesser (who is also a part of the Fenty Beauty crew). By including all of these women in its advertising, Glossier showed that you don’t need to look a certain way to use their products; all are welcome!

We can’t wait to see what all of these brands do in 2018.

12 Excellent Reasons to Look Forward to 2018

It’s safe to say the year 2017 was hard for everyone. Politically, it was a mine field; emotionally, it was a rollercoaster. But let’s not recap the past. A new year is imminent, and with it comes endless possibility. Sure, 2018 will probably be tough in its own right. That said, we prefer to remain forever optimists, so we’re looking ahead with open hearts and fingers crossed.

Next year brings armloads of new movies, television, music, books—but that’s just the cultural arena. We don’t want to give anything away, but there are also big things on the horizon in the way of politics, sports, and even sunscreen (no, seriously). And even if 2018 is just as hard as the year we’re finally bidding adieu, at least we can watch figure skating all through February to ring it in. That’s a silver lining—right? Ahead, revel in 12 reasons to look forward to next year.

New Sunscreen—That Guards from Your iPhone

Supergoop! is already a sunscreen cult favorite for its high coverage and non-sticky formula. But their new Unseen Sunscreen (SPF 40) will appear on shelves in January, and it protects skin from blue light that emanates from our electronic devices, which is supposedly bad. The jury’s still out (a.k.a. the research isn’t conclusive), but it certainly can’t hurt to have a sunscreen that covers all the bases.

When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir

Written by one of the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement, Patrisse Khan-Cullors, and award-winning writer and journalist Asha Bandele, this memoir is a must-read. For a better understanding of the vital activism from Khan-Cullors—and the endless obstacles and misunderstanding the movement has faced—you can pre-order the book now, and have it in your hands January 16.

Feel Free, Zadie Smith’s Second Book of Essays

Smith’s prose could cut glass, and her upcoming collection of essays is sure to be as stunning as her first (or her many works of fiction). When every sentence is a masterpiece, Smith’s essays on pop culture, social issues and politics are sure to be riveting. In particular, be on the lookout for a piece about Jay Z. Drops February 6.

The Olympics!

The Winter Olympics come but once every four years, and this edition of the snowy sport fest will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from February 9 until February 25. You can count on 27 solid days of alpine skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, and, of course, figure skating, which is our absolute favorite sport of all.

The Next Season of Love Drops March 9

The first season of Judd Apatow’s romantic comedy will forever go down in history for including world’s worst date in the history of worst dates (episode five, in case you missed it). We’re anxiously awaiting Love’s next and final season to binge on Netflix to distract ourselves from reality for a few blissful hours.

A Very Royal Wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to tie the knot in May, and if you’re into that kind of thing—weddings, royals—the spectacle sure to ensue is not to be missed. Markle, an American, will become an actual princess come spring, fulfilling many little girls’ dreams in real life.

Ocean’s 8—with an All-Female Cast

The Ocean’s movies are pure fun: Highly choreographed plots, full of twists and turns, deliciously terrible villains, and surprises every 10 minutes. The best part: The cast for this heist includes eight women. Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Awkwafina round out the high-profile crew. For a sneak peek, head here to see the trailer. In theaters June 8.

Tons of New Emojis

When you need to express your mid-afternoon sugar craving or your jubilance on the Fourth of July, now there’ll be an emoji for that. A whopping 67 new emojis—including a cupcake, a firecracker, and a hiking boot—are on the table for release in June 2018, and though they haven’t been approved yet, you can ooh and aah at them in all their glory here.

Drake’s Next Album is en Route

Though we have no release date as yet, Drake announced he was crafting his next release at a show in his home city, Toronto, back in August. It seems as though the tireless rapper has been in the studio semi constantly for the past few years, and he’s not about to let us down next year. We can already hear the beats.

Maniac on Netflix Boasts Some Serious Star Power

Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Justin Theroux, and Jemima Kirke appear in a dark comedy about a man at a psychiatric ward who is removed from reality and lives in a world of his own making—in his mind. Directed by Cary Fukunaga of True Detective fame, the show doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it’s coming.

Midterm Elections

November 6, 2018, will already mark two years since the fateful day Trump was elected as President of the United States of America. Though these elections won’t wipe your memory or erase that date from history books for all time, it will be an excellent (and important!) opportunity to get yourself to the polls and VOTE!

It Won’t be 2017

Much as we’d like to, we can’t promise 2018 will be sparkly and wonderful, full of love and light. (Though here’s deeply hoping.) We can definitely promise that 2018 will not be 2017, though, and we can all be grateful for that. Happy New Year!

Kink Yoga Is the Sexiest Way to Increase Flexibility

While it may sound odd at first, BDSM and yoga really aren’t that different in terms of mindfulness, an altered state of consciousness and similar flow states. Dr. Brad Sagarin, a researcher and author from Northern Illinois University found that “flow is an enjoyable and pleasurable state that people get into when they are performing an activity that requires a high level of skill.” He continues, “It’s a state in which the rest of the world kind of fades away and somebody is concentrating very intensely only on what they are doing.”

We’ve looked at subspace and top space before, but as a refresher, it’s the euphoric sensations that a top and bottom feel during kinky sex. Testosterone levels, cortisol levels, mood and feelings of “flow” are all influenced during BDSM encounters. BDSM is also known to be a state of therapeutic recovery for many trauma and abuse survivors. HelloFlo writer, Sebastian Zulch writes, “While some people go to the gym, have a run, or write out their angry feelings, I get choked and flogged in my bed.” Mindfulness plays a key role here, as it’s applied even more so during BDSM scenes because of deeper levels of trust, which then influence closeness during these particular interactions.

A “flow-state” is a nine-dimensional altered state. It is said to make the ego fall away. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi poetically explained to Wire Magazine, “Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.” In short, it’s an exercise of the mind and body.

When centering yourself on a yoga mat, intentions are typically set for practitioners. Whether it’s your own or a general intention influenced by the instructor, it helps guide the student into a state of mindfulness.

Kink yoga should not be confused with tantric yoga, which aims to improve your sex life through similar ways, centering on your own body and energy. Tantric yoga focuses on energies in the body. While kink yoga does focus on similar characteristics, it can include props and outfits.

Madeline White was first introduced to kink yoga at Kreuzberg Yoga in Germany. The trend of kink yoga is fresh and very new—as recent as three months ago, people began to discuss and comment on the new practice. White explains that kink yoga’s main goal is to “prepare you for Shibari Japanese bondage ropes. Kink yoga focuses on relaxation…”

Shibari translates in English to “to tie,” and its origins rest in the martial arts training of restraining people or captives from 1400 to 1700. In the late 1800s and 1900s, kinbaku, the art of erotic bondage, came to light. It is still practiced today as erotic spirituality and is called “shibari.” The Independent talked to two shibari enthusiasts, one of whom explained, “Some people say it has a meditative effect. It silences the chatter of the everyday.”

The technique of pranayama is central to kink yoga as a way to better control your anxiety in high-stress situations. Prana is a Sanskrit word for “life force,” and ayama, means “extending” or “stretching.” The term pranayama, then, is the extension of breath or controlling your breath. Breathing properly and controlling your oxygen decreases stress and increases overall mood and physical health.

Kink yoga blends normal kinks with yoga practices. In these classes, participants can come dressed up, dressed down, include accessories or be in the nude while practicing typical poses.

Classes involving kink yoga are said to release stress and tension and increase focus. Downward Dog and ball gags probably don’t appear together in your everyday vocabulary all too often, but dominatrices and instructors around the globe are gaining steam with the new mindful practice.

Mistress Anna from Sydney, Australia, teaches a yoga class that includes spanking, whipping, straight jackets and leather. For most practitioners in the class, it’s a way to blend two of their passions: yoga and kink. She explains, “People are being flogged, whipped and tied up. They hold a pose while their kink stuff is played out.” Most classes are a small group of 10 people. Individuals can come into the classroom and explain their kinks and have those played out. Mistress Anna says, “Any kink gets played out during the yoga class,” from sploshing to puppy play—no kink is ignored with proper consent.

While you may be imagining a dungeon-eseque atmosphere, it’s really quite similar to a typical yoga class. There are yoga mats and meditations begin the class, where Anna begins with a Prayer pose. Just as yoga instructors walk around the room, Mistress Anna is adorned in a latex bodysuit and carries a riding crop.

People participating in kink yoga not only have a way to release tension and live out their kinks, they are able to gain flexibility and core strength while also incorporating bondage. The crossover between trained yoga instructors and practicing dominatrices results in a new form of meditation.

On her website, Mistress Anna explains, “Kinky Yoga is Yoga without judgement. It’s Yoga that concentrates on the process of creating, moving and releasing energy. Essentially, it’s Yoga that hurts good.”

How to Pose for Pictures So You Never Fear Being Tagged Again

All of us have occasionally fallen victim to the scourge known as the unflattering photo—and in our current social media-obsessed world, not knowing how to pose for pictures simply isn’t an option. Even if we’re completely satisfied with the way we look in the mirror, a truly bad picture can harness a power so strong that we often find ourselves miserable for days. It might make us shelf an outfit we had originally loved or swear off a particular hairstyle because we think it’s “unflattering.” But that’s not the real issue. What you really need is to learn your best poses and angles.

MORE: 30 Ways to Slay in a Headwrap

In the interest of never taking a shitty photo again, here’s a quick tutorial on how to pose for pictures, with 10 tricks every girl should know.

1. Use your tongue

This is one of best tricks out there—and the weirdest. It might feel strange, but by pressing your tongue on the roof of your mouth while smiling is an effective way to help avoid the dreaded double chin, as it elongates your neck and your jawline. We’ve tried it, and it works! It also works for Heidi Klum and Renee Zellweger, who are fans of this trick.

2. Angle your face

Unless you’re being snapped by a professional portrait photographer, it’s key to avoid direct head-on shots. Why? Because there’ll be an absence of shadows, which could make your face look wider, larger, or slightly discolored. Instead, stand slightly sideways and tilt your chin a little bit upward or a tad downward. From there, be sure to look at something just above your natural line of sight.

3. Twist your body and position your arms

Ah, the old red carpet trick: Position your body 45 degrees and put the arm closest to the camera on your hip. Then plant one foot slightly in front of the other, point your toe to the camera and place your weight on your back leg.

Ever wonder why every celebrity poses with her camera-facing arm on her hip? It’s because that particular move ensures that her upper arm isn’t smooshed against her body making it look flattened (read: larger). If you find the hand-on-hip pose to be a bit forced, try holding your arms out from your sides ever so slightly.

5. Cross your ankles

If you’re being shot head-on (maybe for a street style snap?) cross your legs, starting at the calf. This stance will make your hips look narrower and your legs look longer, plus it looks a bit more casual. It’s worth noting that the pose also works when you’re sitting. Although it’s always preferable to stand in pictures, if you happen to be on a chair or a couch when someone comes at you with a camera, sit up straight and cross your legs at the ankles. It’ll be more flattering than not doing anything with those stems.

6. Don’t follow the group

The key to a stellar group shot? Not all doing the same pose. Not only is that hokey (hello, standing in height order on prom night) but everyone is shaped differently, so the viewer’s eye will naturally gravitate to who looks best in the pose, not the picture. Instead, be sure to stand comfortably without mimicking the people directly next to you.

7. Learn to smile for the camera

Smiling is a tricky thing when it comes to photos. Too big, and you look silly, but none at all can make you look broody or angry. The solution? The ‘natural’ smile you so often do when the camera’s not on you.

Smiling too wide on purpose will cause your face to tense up, your eyes to squint, and your cheeks to puff out, which aren’t the benchmarks of an attractive photo. Instead, take a beat to relax your face and open your mouth  slightly, so that your lower lip matches the curve of your upper teeth. This is universally flattering, and allows you to decide how much teeth you want to show. Not a fan of smiling with teeth? Learn to smize (smile with your eyes, for the non-Tyra followers).

One thing to note: When you smile naturally, the area around your eyes tends to crease a bit, which reads as much more sincere than stiffly smiling just with your mouth.

8. Practice good posture

You’ve heard it 1,000 times, but standing up straight really does make a difference. Not only will it elongate you in photos, but it gives you an aura of strength and confidence, which is naturally alluring.

9. Understand proportion

It’s a basic rule: Whatever is closer to the camera will appear larger.

10. Loosen up

Unless you’re a professional model, odds are that most of the photos you find yourself in are fun, casual shots with friends. As much you think “posing” for these types of pictures will make you look better, the fact remains that loosing up and having a little fun will almost always make for a more flattering snap. Since you’re not trying as hard, there will be less room for error.

YouTuber Accuses Kylie Jenner of Leaving Dark-Skinned Beauty Bloggers Off Her PR List

Ever since Kylie Jenner dropped her 30-shade concealer range with Kylie Cosmetics in December, there has been a lot of talk about her business and inclusivity. Some claimed that she was bandwagoning on Rihanna‘s success with Fenty Beauty’s 40-shade foundation range, while others argued that diverse shades are never a bad thing.

Though most of the controversy has centered on the Fenty Beauty debate, one YouTuber introduced a new, eyebrow-raising grievance: That Kylie Cosmetics is potentially leaving dark-skinned beauty bloggers and media off its PR list. On Thursday, YouTuber Jackie Aina posted a video accusing the 20-year-old reality star of not sending samples of her concealers to dark-skinned beauty bloggers, Revelist first reported.

At the time of shooting her video, Aina claimed that she had only seen one dark-skinned beauty blogger (MakeupShayla) receive Kylie Cosmetics’ concealers for review, in comparison to several light-skinned influencers. She found the phenomenon puzzling considering Kylie’s push toward diversity with her wide concealer range.

“I’m also very curious to know about Kylie’s outreach and social media,” Aina said. “You went out of your way to make all these beautiful bottom row concealers of darker colors, but I didn’t see a single person, outside of Shayla, reviewing these products.”

Aina theorized that the issue was because Kylie Cosmetics’s tendency to leave darker-skinned beauty bloggers off its PR list, which sends complimentary products to press and influencers for review. “”I’m not on her PR list, and I’m most certainly not the only black beauty guru out there,” Aina said.

Though there are a few YouTubers who have reviewed the concealers, most of the videos featured individual products instead of the official 40-shade PR box, which suggested that they bought the concealers with their own money. Aina took Kylie Cosmetics to task for its alleged discrimination. “I want to see some reviews from some chocolate reviews. I just want to know where are they,” Aina said.

Aina also pointed out that Kylie Cosmetics hasn’t featured a model “darker than tan” on its Instagram since December 6, when the concealers were announced. Despite her criticism, Aina admitted that her accusations are based purely on speculation.

“Maybe people aren’t receiving their concealers yet. I don’t know. Maybe she did send them to some more chocolate girls and guys that could review them. I don’t know,” Aina said. “But I kind of feel like you did all that work for nothing by making all those dark colors and then not bothering to send them to any dark-skinned vloggers to review them.”

No word yet on Kylie response to the criticism. Whether Aina’s speculation is true or not, we hope Kylie Cosmetics improves in 2018. Watch Aina’s full review, below.

9 Common Mistakes Women Make While Masturbating

When it comes to masturbating, everyone is different. The thing that cranks you up may do nothing for the next person. It takes trial and error and considerable time experimenting to figure out what gets the job done—and even then, it can help to switch things up every now and then.

If you’re interested in exploring the possibility of taking your self-pleasure skills to a new level, we can help. We asked experts about some common mistakes women make that can limit the satisfaction they get out of masturbation. Ahead, find out how to make pleasuring yourself feel even better.

Pace Yourself

Mistake: Racing to orgasm

Fix: Take it slow! “Masturbating is a great way to relieve stress and get to know your body,” says Jaclinne Cheng, founder and CEO of Spicy Lingerie. “While orgasm feels wonderful, get to know and enjoy the sensual goddess that you are, rather than just focusing on getting off and moving on to the next part of your day.”

Make it an Event

Mistake: Not giving yourself enough time to enjoy it

Fix: Maybe it’s because you’re shy or you only have 10 minutes before you have to head out the door, but either way, take the time to give yourself the pleasure you deserve. “This means setting up an environment that is pleasing and comfortable,” says Bethany Ricciardi, Too Timid’s sex experts. “Light some candles, take a warm shower or bath, slip on something slinky, and put on music that makes you feel frisky. In essence—seduce yourself! Creating a mood that’s conducive to relaxation and pleasure is important to women during masturbation.”

Take the Pressure Off

Mistake: Trying to make masturbation like sex

Fix: Masturbating is inevitably different than sex. This is the time to try new things and get in touch and tune with your body, says Cheng. “Try exploring sensitive parts of your body to increase sensuality, using different kinds of porn and lube, see what you like. When you get to know your body through masturbation, not only will your sex life improve because you’ll know what to ask for, but your relationship with yourself will as well.”

Use Toys

Mistake: Only using your fingers

Fix: If you haven’t already, buy your first beginner’s vibe! “If you thought you got big O’s with your fingers, you’ll love this new sensation,” says Ricciardi. “Vibrators offer more intense stimulation that can lead to multiple orgasms. When you add in a toy to masturbation it’s best to go slowly and see what speed works best. Using a sex toy on your own during masturbation is also a great way to learn which toys you’d like to bring into playtime for your partner to use on you.”

Shop Around

Mistake: Using the same vibrator you’ve had for years

Fix: Try new products! There are literally hundreds of different styles, shapes, colors, and sizes of sex toys on the market. “Whether you’re using a tiny bullet vibe to stimulate your clitoris or a dual-rotating vibrator that gives you internal and external stimulation, try new things,” says Kenna Cook, a sex educator. “Your body changes over time and so does the your sexual response. Get to know yourself as you change.”

Try Porn

Mistake: Being shy about using porn to turn you on

Fix: Not all of us have wild imaginations that can get us in the mood. “There are plenty of media materials out there that can help guide you into a better masturbation experience. Try reading an erotic novel or watching your favorite steamy sex scene from movie,” says Cheng.

Experiment with Anal

Mistake: You’ve never tried anal stimulation

Fix: Anal isn’t for everyone, but FYI, the anus is quite sensitive to the touch—yes, even your own touch! “Many women enjoy stimulation of this area during masturbation,”says Ricciardi. “The best way to experiment is starting with your fingers or anal toys. I think trying it first with clitoral or vaginal stimulation is the easiest way to introduce it, but you can always try experiencing anal stimulation by itself right off the bat.”

Lube Up

Mistake: Forgetting to use lube

How to make it right: Lubricant isn’t just for partner-penetrative sex. “My go-to tip: The wetter, the better!” says Cook. “Lube will create less friction for your genitals, which can help to increase pleasure, especially if you masturbate in an object in the same position on the same body part for an extended period of time.”

Change the Scenery

Mistake: You always stay in bed

Fix: Moving around to new locations can be a big turn-on. Try using furniture and appliances in your own house, says Ricciardi. “Don’t be afraid to lie on your stomach and move against an object to stimulate the clitoris. Rubbing against the corner of a piece of furniture might do the trick! Riding a pillow is another great way; you can bunch it up or twist the ends into a hard knot and press it up against your clit. My favorite option is to take that detached shower head you thought was just for washing hair and target it right at your lady parts and send a steady water stream onto the nipples or clit.”

Get in Shape

Mistake: You never do anything to keep vagina in shape

Fix: Maybe you’re feeling bored because you haven’t done anything different since you first started masturbating—including keeping the muscles down there strong. “If you’re craving longer, stronger orgasms, try kegels!” says Ricciardi. “These strengthen your pelvic floor, making every climax contraction more powerful. Pay attention to your body, you could make these orgasms 10 times better with some squeezes.”

How Therapy Helped Me Deal with My Debilitating Anxiety

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve always had very antiquated views of therapy. I thought it was an expensive health insurance add-on that people only used after going through traumatic experiences. Mental health was rarely brought up in my family of mostly women. We never talked about our problems; we pretended they didn’t exist or just dealt with them on our own. My mother did an excellent job of shielding my siblings and me from any hardships she went through. So, if you’d told me a year ago that therapy would become one of the most important things in my life, I probably would have laughed at you.

For me, 2017 began with a laundry list of resolutions: Find a new job, redecorate my apartment, write a play, read more books, lose 10 pounds, go back to church… the list goes on. I love being busy. For as long as I can remember, idle time equated to laziness. If I slept in one too many hours or couldn’t solve problems on my own, I felt I was falling short of the (unrealistic) expectations I set for myself. But the older I got, the more these ingrained habits and beliefs led to debilitating anxiety attacks and mornings where I could barely peel myself out of bed. I was an overachiever, but incredibly unhappy because the activities I filled my schedule with were the equivalent of empty calories: pointless and harmful.

If you’d told me a year ago that therapy would be one of the most important things in my life, I would have laughed.

I certainly didn’t have some huge epiphany that led me to finally decide to talk to a professional. Going into it, my expectations were pretty low. But it felt like everyone around me had a therapist of their own and my insurance covered it, so I figured, why not?

The first session did nothing to prove to my assumptions wrong. There were a lot of questions and talk about depression, but—true to my overachieving nature—I felt like I couldn’t just quit, and should stick it out for awhile. Plus, my primary physician recommended it as a way to help alleviate some of the physical issues I’d struggled with, like painful migraines and dizzy spells.

I’m glad I did, because although it was a slow burn, therapy eventually forced me to put my big-girl pants on and deal with some deep-rooted issues I’d been in denial about, but needed to face.

My ingrained overachieving habits led to debilitating anxiety attacks and mornings where I could barely get out of bed.

Being the “Strong” One Got Exhausting

If there’s one thing I pride myself on, it’s being honest and telling it like it is. That’s why my friends have always looked to me for advice—unsolicited or otherwise. I’m the one you call in the middle of the night when you can’t sleep or the person who shows up when no one else does.

Knowing that people put you on a high pedestal is a major ego boost, and I thrived on it. Over time, it somehow became a key part of my identity. I rarely allowed myself to appear weak, vulnerable, or discuss my own problems because I didn’t want to let others down or make them feel as though I didn’t have time or energy to be there for them. Instead, I did what I saw my family do while I grew up: I insisted I was “fine!” or ignored it if anyone noticed I wasn’t doing so hot.

I rarely allowed myself to appear weak or vulnerable because I didn’t want to let others down.

Therapy ultimately helped me break that pattern. My therapist doesn’t talk over me after asking a question. Instead, she sits and stares until I answer it for myself; even if it takes the entire hour for me to do. It was one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve ever experienced (staring contests are awkward), but once you get used to spilling your guts week after week… you start to like it.

One of the most important things I learned through therapy is that flushing out the thoughts you keep trapped inside your head isn’t weak. It’s empowering. I’m still learning to let my guard down with the ones I love most, but until then, I know I have a place where I can do it without squirming. To me, that qualifies as self-care.

Once you get used to spilling your guts week after week, you start to like it.

Bubble Baths and Candles Don’t Always Cut It

Modifying (and prioritizing) my self-care routine to reflect my emotional needs was another positive change that came about as a result of therapy. As a beauty editor, I’m used to writing about bath bombs, candles, and other soothing products that lend themselves to a relaxing night—but truth be told, none of those things have ever worked for me. They feel good and pack plenty of outward benefits, but my obsession with achievement and strength required a strategy that dug deeper.

Sometimes, it’s as simple as turning off my phone or telling my boss that I need to take a half-day. When an anxiety attack rears its ugly head, I now know it’s easier to simply acknowledge my feelings rather than cover them up with unhealthy habits, like drinking or lashing out.

I now know it’s easier to simply acknowledge my feelings rather than drink or lash out.

Another major game-changer for me was writing out a schedule every week with my therapist. I still find it slightly embarrassing to admit that I need help planning my days out. But after accounting for every hour, I quickly realized that I left no time to even get a decent night’s sleep. It’s no wonder my anxiety was always through the roof—I’d gotten addicted to overbooking myself!

Of course, I’m still a work in progress (and always will be), but I’ve learned that I don’t need to say yes to everything. Sometimes, I need to go home and eat a decent meal. And ironically, I now have more time to sit in a bathtub with a candle or two.

I’m still a work in progress (and always will be), but I’ve learned that I don’t need to say yes to everything.

Awareness is the First Step

I could write a short novel about all the lightbulb moments and lifestyle changes I’ve made since prioritizing therapy. In short, for all its (significant) benefits, therapy is not a quick fix for anything. Trust me—I questioned why I was even doing it for a full three months. Getting to know yourself takes time; a lifetime for some.

I think the first step is learning to acknowledge the things that stifle you. For me, that was anxiety and random bouts of depression. I didn’t know why either of them kept happening, which made them even more difficult to face. Working with a therapist helped me to discover the habits that were exacerbating them.

Once I could identify my triggers, I was able to test-drive tons of techniques to alleviate them. I’m still figuring it all out, but nothing is more freeing than being able to turn the lights on in my head and take a good look at what’s going on. And once you can see that stuff, it becomes easier to let go of. My only goal for 2018 is to continue this without the distraction of traditional resolutions that I won’t keep anyway.

Karrueche Tran Has Mastered the High-Low Skin Care Routine

The unspoken competition between drugstore and prestige brands is stronger than ever, albeit both are exceptional in their own ways. And for that reason, nothing makes us happier than someone willing to sing the praises of both.

Such was the case for Karrueche Tran, who recently broke down her entire skin care routine for “The Cut,” and name-dropped enough products, both affordable and luxe, to keep us occupied through 2018. The self-professed skin picker (“I sit in front of the mirror and pick at my face until I’m all red and ugly and looking crazy”) swears by NARS and Bobbi Brown for her makeup, but is a little more flexible with her cleansing habits.

The “CLAWS” actress is all about breaking a sweat before a cream or gel can even touch her face. In addition to hot yoga classes and sauna sessions, she recently invested in a facial steamer to keep her pores from filling with gunk.

“I recently invested in a facial steamer that you put water into. I wash my face, steam it, and put on a mask right after because the steam opens up your pores,” she said. “I put the mask on for ten minutes, wash it off, and then melt an ice cube all over my face because that tightens your pores.”

Her mask selection is a hodge podge of well-known names like GLAMGLOW, Peter Thomas Roth, Origins and La Mer, but she’s also hip to the not-so-popular ones hiding in plain sight.

Que Bella Face Mask

Target

“Even Target, there’s a brand called Que Bella that has very affordable masks. Those work very well too.” The brand’s price range is $2-$10, and each mask is made with a minimum of 80 percent natural ingredients. The range is mostly sheet masks, although it also includes mud, cream and gel formulas.

With so many products crowding the beauty aisle of Target, we’re always happy when someone can point us in the direction of an underrated find worth trying. We’ll be adding this one to our wish list for the New Year.

How Orgasms Can Change Throughout Your Menstrual Cycle

As anyone who has had their period will know, menstrual cycles are a complicated business. Not only can cycles be unpredictable—even the best period-monitoring app in the world can’t seem to tell me when I’m ovulating—they can also affect a person’s orgasm.

I often have sex on my period and am a big believer in having sex as often as possible, mainly because it makes my body feel so much better (the healing powers and painkilling properties of orgasms). But one thing I’ve noticed is that my orgasms change in intensity and sensation throughout my menstrual cycle. While one week, I might experience intense and full-body orgasms, the next week, the climax could be altogether duller and muted.

MORE: 3 Science-Proven Ways to Have More Orgasms

According to Psychology Today, several studies have determined that a person’s menstrual cycle has an automatic effect on their orgasms. As the publication notes, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville conducted a survey charting 115 women between the ages of 23 and 45. “[T]he women reported significantly more interest in sex and greater satisfaction from orgasm at mid-cycle.”

Similarly, Dutch researchers found that “genital blood flow increased the most around the time of ovulation,” leading to stronger orgasms. As Psychology Today concludes, there’s a definite link between women’s orgasms and their menstrual cycles.

Redbook spoke to Dr. Jamie Knopman, who said, “The cervix also changes position around the time of ovulation—its position becomes more ‘comfortable’ when you are ovulating, making intercourse less uncomfortable.” Basically, changes happening in your body linked to your menstrual cycle could be making sex better and increasing the chances of having an orgasm.

The creators behind the period-tracking app Glow shared their research with SheKnows, taking “7.6 million sexual encounters into consideration.” According to their findings, “orgasm potential is directly related to when you get your period.” While the exact timing of the perfect orgasm might vary from person to person, Glow’s research suggests most women will be at their horniest one week before their period. And the scientific reason for this? “Because while a woman’s testosterone levels drop then, her libido increases because her uterine lining is thickening.” So the science might not sound sexy, but the changes in testosterone levels make sense.

MORE: What 7 Women Wish Their Partners Knew About Getting Them Off

For me, my orgasms vary massively depending on how my body is feeling, altered by both my menstrual cycle and my chronic illness. Consistently, my orgasms feel less intense in the week leading up to my period, despite sex still being enjoyable. When I reach the climax, during this time, my orgasms often feel zapped of intensity or they fail to send pleasure in all of the directions it’s meant to go. Conversely, during and right after my period, my orgasms usually feel fuller, more powerful and filled with twanging muscle spasms. That there’s a reason for these changes and a pattern that develops each month is reassuring.
