The Hilarious Way Jennifer Lawrence Hid a Pizza Stain on Her Red Carpet Dress

In case you didn’t know, Jennifer Lawrence loves pizza. The 27-year-old’s pizza obsession has been documented in hundreds, if not thousands, of GIFs, and not a late-night interview goes by that she doesn’t sing the praises of pepperoni. But the actress’s recent pizza interaction, in which she wore a pizza-stained dress on a red carpet and hilariously tried to cover it up, definitely takes the cake. (Or should we say pie?)

On Sunday, “The Hunger Games” returned to her home state of Kentucky, where she walked the red carpet at the opening night of Derby Week at Louisville’s Churchill Downs. On the carpet, Lawrence turned heads in a silk Dolce & Gabbana dress and an orange clutch. To the naked eye, Lawrence’s dress wasn’t different from any other red carpet looks she has worn in the past. But to the actress’s entourage, the look was intricately put together to hide a huge pizza stain smack-dab on Lawrence’s thigh.

According to a source for Page Six, Lawrence accidentally left her Derby Week dress in New York City, and had to have it flown in on a private plane. When it arrived, Lawrence and her team discovered that there was a very-obvious pizza stain, which is when she devised another plan.

“She actually forgot the Dolce & Gabbana dress that she was going to wear for the opening of Derby Week at Churchill Downs in New York City,” the source told Page Six. “She had to have her dress flown down via private jet, just to learn it had a pizza stain on it!”

To hide the stain from the paparazzi, Lawrence used her orange clutch, which she held close to her bottom left thigh area to not show any of the pizza grease. The plan would’ve worked masterfully, if Lawrence didn’t hint that something was up by laughing her way down the red carpet. “[She] did her best to conceal her pizza stain with her clutch the whole evening, but laughed about it as she walked the orange carpet,” the source said.

In the end, Lawrence’s plan worked out, as all we could see was her clutch glued to her thigh and not even a smudge of pizza grease. We hope Lawrence celebrated her success by eating more pizza, preferably in the same dress.

The Best Self-Tanners for Bronzing Your Body

When it comes to getting glowy in the summer, there’s no competition between baking in the sun and self tanning; in our eyes, the latter will always win. It takes less time, fades away over time and above all: it’s safer! Even with sunscreen, extended sun exposure leaves us vulnerable to skin disorders and disease, especially since we rarely reapply it throughout the day.

MORE: Everything You Need to Know About Spray Tanning in the Winter

Spray tanning or using a self tanner allows you to harness all the benefits of a traditional sun sesh and more often than not, the formulas are also chock full of ingredients that nourish the skin, in addition to tinting it. Bronzing the face can be tricky, depending on the skin type category you fall under, but the body isn’t so intimidating, as long as you’re cognizant of the differences in application.

“For your body, you want to make sure you have exfoliated and shaved and if you have waxed, wait about 24 hours before applying, just so that your hair follicles/pores have time to settle,” says Sophie Evans, Skin Finishing Workout for St. Tropez.

MORE: The 13 Best Self-Tanners for Your Face

For the face, make sure that all makeup is removed and you’ve lightly exfoliated. Evans also recommends steering away from retinol creams and using in conjunction with a light layer of moisturizer and/or eye serum instead.

“A lot of people ask if you can use body self tanners on the face and the answer is yes, but you would combine with other skin-care products,” she says. “Self tans designed for the face have premium anti-aging ingredients and formulated perfectly for the delicate face area. The face has a tendency to develop a little darker due to a higher Ph level in the facial area, so self-tans designed for the face are formulated a little lighter.”

Since we’ve already shared the best self tanners for the face, ahead are 10 body-specific options that’ll give you color without the streaking and icky transfer.

A Glossary of Modern Sexuality Terms Everyone Should Know

As our understanding of gender and sexuality is evolving, so are the words we use to describe them. There are many more sexual identities and expressions than previously acknowledged, so it’s about time we named more of them.

“The binary options of gender (man or woman) and sexuality (heterosexual or gay) are way too limiting to capture the complexity of human life,” says sex educator Kenna Cook. “There are so many variations in our personalities, beliefs, and DNA that limiting human sexuality to a tiny box of two choices makes it impossible for people to exist authentically.”

Learning the correct terminology for different expressions of gender and sexuality is essential not only to participate in conversations on this topic in an educated way, but also to support the people in your own life who might identify with them. “Language gives us ownership of our identities and autonomy over our personal choices,” says Cook. “Having words to communicate our identities gives us a way to find others similar to us. Words can help us feel seen.”

So, here are a few human sexuality terms that you might not know but should.

Cisgender: Identifying with the same sex you were assigned at birth. A cisgender woman, for example, may have been born with female anatomy, like a vulva, and assigned female at birth.

Transgender: Identifying with a gender that differs from the sex you were assigned at birth. For example, trans women are people who may have male anatomy and been assigned male at birth and identify as women.

Queer: Anything other than straight and cisgender, or, more generally, breaking the mold of what society teaches us are the default options for gender and sexuality.

Sexually fluid: Feeling attracted to different genders at different times in one’s lifetime, or open to sexual relationships with a gender that one is not normally attracted to. For example, a heterosexual women who occasionally is attracted to women might identify as sexually fluid.

Words can help us feel seen.

Pansexual: Attracted to all variations of gender identities. Because there are more than two genders, pansexual people may not find the word “bisexual” adequate to describe their sexual identities.

Asexual: Not experiencing sexual attraction to other people. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t have sexual urges or romantic attraction to others. In fact, many aseuxal people masturbate and have romantic relationships. Some people also feel some sexual attraction to others but view themselves as on the asexual spectrum.

Pangender: Feeling an affiliation with multiple gender identities. A pangender person, for example, might feel they embody male, female, and other genders simultaneously.

Agender: Not identifying with any gender. Agender people might disagree with the whole concept of gender or simply feel that it does not apply to them.

Language gives us ownership of our identities and autonomy over our personal choices.

MORE: This Is Why I Decided to Become a Sex Worker

Non-binary: Not exclusively identifying as male or female. Non-binary people may also identify as agender, pangender, or trans. They can also identify as male or female in addition to being non-binary. Some non-binary people use the pronouns “they/them”.

Genderqueer: Expressing gender outside of cisgender. This could include someone who is trans, non-binary, pangender, agender, or simply “genderqueer,” without any other gender label.

Gender-nonconforming: This term is sometimes used simply to denote a lack of adherence to typical gender roles or stereotypes. Other times, it indicates a refusal to identify with a gender. Some non-binary and trans people also identify as gender-nonconforming.

Polyamory (a.k.a. ethical non-monogamy): Consensually having romantic relationships with more than one person, whether with one primary partner and other secondary partners or with several partners given equal importance.

Having words to communicate our identities gives us a way to find others similar to us.

MORE: How to Discover Your Sexual Identity and Make the Most of It

Open relationship: A relationship in which one or more people are permitted to have other sexual or romantic relationships. This type of relationship agreement can exist in both monogamous and non-monogamous relationships.

Solo polyamory: Someone who considers their primary relationship to be with themselves. Sometimes this means having multiple partners but not a “primary” relationship with anyone.

BDSM: an acronym for Bondage, Dominance, Submission/Sadism, and Masochism.

Kink: a term that is representative of alternative sexual interests like BDSM, sexual fetishes, and other forms of sexual expression that depart from what’s considered “vanilla” sexual expression.

Keep in mind that all these definitions are personal, so you won’t be able to say which term applies to another person unless you ask. For this reason, it’s important not to make assumptions about who someone dates, who they have sex with, or how they identify based on how they look or act.

e.l.f. Added $10 Booster Drops to Its Ultra-Affordable Skin-Care Range

We love e.l.f. Cosmetics for more than a few reasons, but the under-$10 price tags are what keep everybody–including us–coming back for more. The majority of the brand’s tenure has been dedicated to affordable makeup products, like the best selling brush sets and Flawless Finish Foundation, but it’s all about skin-care in 2018.

So far, we’ve gotten a line of sheet masks, an Active Collection for the gym rats, the Beauty Shield line-up for protection against pollution and now, there’s a set of skin boosters bringing us one step closer to the lit-from-within glow, whether you wear makeup or not. There’s three different versions that retail for $10 each.

The “Antioxidant” one is made with  Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Snow Mushroom Extract for brightening hydration, while a “Sunkissed” formula is made with Vitamin E and Argan oil, and a “Hydrating” version is infused with Vitamin E. All three options can be used alone or mixed in with the coverage of your choice; the latter being an expert-approved method for making the skin look dewy instead of greasy.

As of now, the boosters are only available online, but here’s hoping e.l.f. will put them in physical stores, too. If our skin needs a pick-me-up, we might need to grab it on-the-go and overnight shipping just won’t do.

Abigail Breslin on Boob Job Rumors and Facing ‘Unrealistic’ Beauty Standards

By the time she was 14, Abigail Breslin had a career that most actors, young and old, would envy. She had an Oscar nomination, roles opposite A-listers such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Cate Blanchett, and Cameron Diaz, and a promising career as one of Hollywood’s next It-girls.

But behind the scenes, Breslin considered herself an ordinary teenager, going through the same struggles and experiences that all puberty-age girls go through. The only key difference: Her mistakes and bodily changes were splashed across the tabloids.

“I had a pretty similar upbringing,” Breslin tells StyleCaster at an event for Always’s #LikeAGirl campaign with Walmart. “The only difference with my childhood was that I had all the same feelings, but maybe they were more amplified in terms of being in the public eye.”

Abigail Breslin

In a matter of months, Breslin watched as the media’s opinion of her changed from the squeaky-clean 10-year-old audiences met in “Little Miss Sunshine” to a young woman still finding herself. Breslin started to see her name attached to plastic surgery rumors, accusing her of surgically enhancing body parts that naturally transitioned during puberty.

“I remember being 14 and having an article written about me getting a boob job,” Breslin says. “I was like, ‘I didn’t get a boob job. I just got boobs. I’m a girl going through puberty.’ That was really weird. As a young girl, that definitely makes you very self-conscious, knowing that people are looking at your body and your face and the way that it changes.”

That was the trickiest part, trying to figure out who I was without other people’s opinions affecting that.

Even small mistakes, such as Breslin cutting her hair into bangs, were scrutinized by the media, making it difficult for her to find her identity as an adult while facing constant criticism.

“We all have made mistakes. I made the same mistake that many, many people made of getting bangs when I was 13, and it was not a good look for me,” Breslin says. “Now people have bad haircuts and they get made fun of on Instagram. But for me, it was in People magazine. It was definitely scary. That was the trickiest part, trying to figure out who I was without other people’s opinions affecting that.”

Though Breslin eventually learned to ignore the tabloids’ coverage of her, she couldn’t shake the sexist difference between the way that she and her mistakes were written about versus her male peers.

“It’s a double standard. If you open up a tabloid, you see 20 pictures of women with the wrong pair of jeans on with the wrong top, but you never see a paparazzi picture of a guy coming out of a bathroom with his face not shaven perfectly or his zipper down,” Breslin says. “It’s about the way society discusses those things. When a guy looks messy, it’s, ‘Oh, he’s just a guy being a guy. It’s so charming.’ When it’s a woman, it’s, ‘Wow. She’s really let herself go. She doesn’t care about herself. She’s going off the deep end.’ There’s much more targeted negativity toward women. The forgiveness level for men is much higher.”

I feel the most confident when I’m working out to take care of myself.

Breslin’s fight against unrealistic beauty standards is why she’s defended female celebrities, such as Selena Gomez, against body-shaming, and called out fitness companies, such as Gold’s Gym, for promoting thinness and suggesting that the sole purpose of working out is to become skinny—a lesson that Breslin herself has had to learn.

“It’s so out there in the media that you should look a certain way and have a certain body type,” Breslin says. “A lot of the time, that’s completely unattainable and unrealistic. When I was younger, I wish I had people saying, ‘You don’t have to work out every single day to be stick-skinny or to be a certain way or to get a bigger butt. You should do it because it’s healthy for you.’ I feel the most confident when I’m working out to take care of myself, even if I don’t have Gisele Bündchen’s body.”

MORE: Chrissy Teigen on Giving Luna Brown-Skinned Dolls and Embracing Her Thai Culture

Though she doesn’t consider herself a role model (“I don’t claim to know everything. I make mistakes all the time”), Breslin acknowledges that she does have an influence over young fans, which is why she takes special care in choosing roles that show young women in a positive light—something she saw lacking when she was growing up.

“I’ve seen my friends’ little sisters saying, ‘I’m going on a diet because I saw this thing on Instagram.’ I’m like, ‘You’re 10. No. What are you talking about?’” Breslin says. “The older that I get and the more I remember how I felt when I was younger and how the things on TV and in film influenced me, I started to realize that, whether you like it or not, you are somebody who is being looked at and watched by younger people. I do feel somewhat of a responsibility in choosing characters that are women that have depth and have complicated lives and are not just the hot girl or the nerdy girl.”

Lindsay Lohan Dragged Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes for Their Outfits

Lindsay Lohan‘s celebrity feuds have been documented to death. There was the time that she and Hilary Duff dated Aaron Carter at the same time as each other, and who can forget when she called Paris Hilton a “c—t,” only to deny it seconds later? But there are two celebrities who we never expected the 31-year-old to beef with: Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes.

The “Mean Girls” actress recently put the celebrity couple on blast when @best_outfits_, a style Instagram, posted a picture of their outfits. The photo featured Gosling and Mendes walking hand-in-hand while rocking coordinating looks. Gosling wore a baggy blue over-shirt and dark-washed jeans, while his wife sported a textured red sweater and black pants. The pair looked more stylish than most celebrity couples out there, but to Lohan, their style could use some work.

In a screenshot captured by @commentsbycelebs, Lohan let her opinion be known that she wasn’t a fan of Gosling and Mendes’s fashion choices. “I don’t like this look,” she commented.

5 Black-Beauty-Editor-Approved Sunscreens That Won’t Make Your Skin Look Ashy

Long after I’ve retired from this beauty editor gig, I’ll still be hammering the importance of sun protection into people’s heads. In my twentysomething years of living, it remains one of the most overlooked skin-care habits, even as we continue to learn more about the connection between sun exposure and a handful of life-threatening diseases; ever heard of a little thing called skin cancer?

The list of excuses for not wearing sunscreen every day is long and tired. If you have time to drink a gallon of water every day or apply an entire makeup beat in minutes, surely you can make a little room for SPF. And when you consider the number of beauty products actually infused with protection properties, I mean … come on. It has to end here, even if you’ve got brown skin like me and are convinced SPF almost always leaves a white, chalky cast. The assumption that darker skin is immune from serious sun damage is one of the most dangerous myths out there. And for some reason, we keep believing it!

“Although darker skin does have more natural protection from the sun, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen use with an SPF of at least 30 is still highly recommended,” says Valerie D. Callender, MD, FAAD, medical director of Callender Dermatology & Cosmetic Center. “All skin incurs free-radical damage from UV radiation and the potential for skin cancer, regardless of color.”

Now I’ll admit that the struggle can be real. More often than not, sunscreens made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—which happens to be the most widely used SPF ingredients—aren’t the most flattering on brown skin. But there are other options that don’t make us look like Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Alternatively, you can invest in SPF products that use a lower concentration of those ingredients, since they do actually provide the protection we need. Ahead are five that I’ve actually tried and can recommend as viable options for darker skin.

This formula feels extra-juicy when you first apply, but it’s quick-absorbing, transparent, and doesn’t need an over-abundance of rubbing in. It also has that Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation, so you know the experts would actually recommend it.

Dr. Callender adds that although it “contains zinc oxide at 9.0 percent, the micronized form used in conjunction with 7.5 percent octinoxate provides excellent protection without causing the gray hue often associated with zinc oxide use. This formula also contains silymarin and caffeine, two ingredients that add extra protection against the free-radical damage caused by UV exposure.”

I’ve waxed poetic about the wonders of squalane oil before, and this sunscreen harnesses its moisturizing benefits along with a high level of SPF. My only tip would be to really blend this one in. When you first apply to the skin, it does give off a gray cast because the formula is on the thicker side. But once it’s completely rubbed in, it gives the skin a matte feel that sits comfortably under makeup.

This one also requires a lot of blending, but my favorite thing about it is that it doesn’t transfer to the top of my shirts when I’m getting dressed and undressed. Sarah Hyland Reveals Her Hair Is Falling Out from Years of Chronic Illness Medication

For years, Sarah Hyland has been open about her life-long battle with kidney dysplasia, a chronic illness that affects her weight, strength, and energy. But one thing that the 27-year-old actress hasn’t talked about is her hair and how, after years of taking medication for the condition, her hair is significantly thinning and falling out.

On Friday, the “Modern Family” star took to her Instagram story to ask her 5.6 million followers for recommendations on what products she can use to thicken and grow back her hair, The Mighty first reported. Hyland explained that many popular hair-growth supplements, such as Viviscal and Nutrafol, interact with her kidney dysplasia medication, which is why she’s unable to take them.

“Help, help, help. What hair care products are out there for thinning hair, this 27-year-old would like to know. I know it seems like I don’t but I do,” Hyland said. “Some of my medications have been making my hair fall out. Some supplements like Viviscal and Nutrafol I’ve talked to my pharmacist and I’m not allowed to take them because they interact with those medications.”

Hyland then asked followers who take similar immune-suppressing medication what products they use for their thinning hair. “So for those on prednisone and Prograf and Myfortic and any immune-suppressing medications, have you found anything other than just biotin that works?” Hyland said, adding “Help! I am over researching myself.”

After reading hundreds of suggestions, Hyland reaches the conclusion to use castor oil, which her followers recommended leaving in like a mask and washing out. Other suggestions include taking antioxidants and using shampoos from hair-healing brands such as Caviar, Hask, and Monat.

Though Hyland admitted that she was going to try several solutions, the one she was dead-set on was a DIY hair mask made of coconut oil, avocado, castor oil, and vitamin E. “But I think I’m gonna try more of the like, castor and coconut oil and avocado mix, maybe I’ll put some vitamin E in there. I don’t know,” she said. “Thanks for the help guys.”

The actress makes an important point that you should always check with your doctor before you take supplements with your medication. But along from shining a light on a problem that many people with chronic illness have, Hyland’s openness about her hair loss helped to destigmatize an issue that many women face.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than 40 percent of women experience hair loss by the time they turn 40. The word is still out on whether Hyland has found a solution for her thinning hair, but at least many of her followers who are also experiencing hair loss know that they’re not alone.

Gigi Hadid Bombarded by Anti-Fur Protesters Pretending to Be Fans at Meet-and-Greet

With designers waiting to dress her and millions of fans desperate to copy her looks, Gigi Hadid is an undeniable fashion icon. But that doesn’t mean that everyone is a fan of her outfits. On Thursday, the 23-year-old model was bombarded at a meet-and-greet by a group of anti-fur protesters who had an issue with her history of wearing fur.

The incident occurred at a signing for Hadid’s collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger at a Macy’s in New York City’s Herald Square. In a video obtained by the Daily Mail, Hadid can be seen sitting at a table, waiting for the next fan as a woman, pretending to be a fan, approaches her. Hadid reaches up for a hug as the woman tells her something and tries to show her something on her phone.

When Hadid looks away to sign a card for her, the woman reaches from under her clothes and pulls out a sign with the words: “Gigi Kills.” Seconds later, another woman approaches the table with a sign reading, “Fur Scum.” The women are seen chanting, “Gigi Hadid. Shame on you!” as their signs are wrestled away from them and they’re ushered off the premises by security. The video shows Hadid briefly looking up at the women’s signs when they begin chanting before looking toward the crowd and back down at the table until the commotion is over.

The video then cuts to moments later when Hadid is escorted away from the stage to compose herself. According to fans who were there, Hadid returns minutes later to continue her signing. However, almost immediately after her return, the model was approached by protesters again, leading security to cancel the event.

Though it’s unclear whether she was wearing real or faux fur, Hadid has been photographed wearing fur-looking clothes on many occasions.

Aside from a couple Instagram pictures from the event Hadid hasn’t addressed the incident. Ironically enough, Tommy Hilfiger, Hadid’s collaborator, went fur-free in 2007. We wonder when, if ever, Hadid did the same.

When it comes to makeup goddesses, there’s one name universally on the list: Pat McGrath. Since the launch of her eponymous makeup line in 2015, McGrath’s been consistently giving the people what they want. What do they want now? Lip gloss.

Yep, that’s right. If you’ve been paying attention to what celebrities have been wearing these days, it hasn’t been the classic matte lip—rather, it’s been a high-shine gloss. And if you’re already hot and heavy on the gloss train, the addition of 14 lip glosses to McGrath’s permanent collection is going to make your heart sing.

With 14 different bottles, you’ll have your pick of shimmery and non-shimmery options. There are classic colors like light pinks, nudes, and reds, but it wouldn’t be a McGrath collection without a few bold colors like gold and fuschia. The makeup icon recommends a simple swipe across the lips for a classic pout, but also dares you to test out layering with concealer and her lip pencils for a completely different look.

Of course, McGrath isn’t going to whip up anything less than perfect, which is why she focused on making the product show-stopping and comfortable. Instead of a sticky formula, McGrath told Allure it’s a “gel matrix formulation. There’s a little bit of oil in there that gives you a comfort and an ease. I wanted them to feel like you’re wearing a lip balm.”

The best news of it all is it’s not going to cost you an arm and a leg to get in on McGrath’s new glosses. Each tube is $28 and can be found on McGrath’s website (and if you already know you need all 14 tubes, you can purchase the entire set in the Everything Kit for $325). And if you don’t want to go all-out on the whole thing but are eyeing a few colors, McGrath has made things easy for you: you can purchase a set of four glosses based on undertone—warm, cool, red, etc.— for $95.

The glosses drop May 10 at 12pm EST, so arm your computer, fingers, and credit card, because it might get wild.

Breakfast Salads Are a Thing, and Yes, You Should Be Eating Them

Eating a healthy breakfast is kind of like working out first thing in the morning—it sets you on the right track and paves the way for healthier choices throughout the day… or at least yields less guilt when you eat that candy bar at 3 p.m.

How to Refresh Textured Curls Without Drenching Them in Water

My hair journey is laden with plenty of benchmark moments, including a big chop and platinum-blonde dye job. But none have been more challenging than waiting for my hair to grow out and in the process, avoid over-manipulating my curls to the point of damage. The common misconception with super-short hair—textured or otherwise—is that cutting length somehow makes a day-to-day routine easier.

But if the past year has taught me anything, it’s that developing healthy hair habits takes discipline, time, and plenty of trial and error. One of the biggest challenges that I and many other naturalistas face is figuring out how the heck to keep those fresh, day-one curls and coils intact without having to dunk our heads under the sink or shower every day.

Steam Is Your Friend

The wet look is appealing, and for me, addictive,  but since water (especially the hot kind) opens up the hair shaft, leaving it more susceptible to damage, that type of day-to-day moisture isn’t ideal. However, that doesn’t mean your hair needs to be completely shielded from water in between washes. According to celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims, whose clients include Gabrielle Union and Zendaya, the steam produced from it is actually a big help.

“I always recommend a taking a hot, steamy shower to add moisture to your curls without getting them wet. It’s always good to use a curl-defining product to enhance the natural pattern,” he says. Product options abound—including this list of our favorites—but Sims’s go-to is the Smooth ’N Shine Defining Mousse. Whether you’re using this or something else, he recommends applying a quarter-size amount—give or take depending on your length—and working from root to tip, scrunching the hair with your hand and not a brush.

Diffuse with Caution

From there, “you can air dry naturally or use a diffuser to achieve more voluminous curls.” A diffuser is an attachment for a blow-dryer that helps disperse air more evenly over a large area, thus minimizing the intensity of heat that can disturb and destroy the curl pattern.

Regardless of the shape you use (the most common ones are flat), they should be used while the dryer is on a low heat setting and in constant movement. Again, keeping it concentrated in one area for a long time can lead to more frizz and a weak curl pattern. And if you’re doing this at night, stretch out the life of your curls even more by keeping them tucked under a satin bonnet or atop a silk/satin pillowcase to prevent them from fraying. Also, be wary of product build-up over time. In between styling, keep your scalp and strands refreshed with a clarifier, like apple cider vinegar, or simply stick to a clarifying shampoo on wash day.

All in all, the combination of a dependable curl definer, steam, and diffusion generally gets the job done. But ultimately, you’ll need a routine that’s as unique as your curl pattern and that may include observing what others with hair like yours are doing. Ahead are the curl-defining routines of three popular bloggers with varying textures. Take notes and pay attention; you may spot a technique or product worth trying.

Halsey Calls Out the Hospitality Industry for Neglecting the Hair-Care Needs of PoC

With brands like Fenty and Jouer having upwards of 50 foundation shades and providing matching shade charts, it’s easy to be whisked away into a world where the beauty industry is finally taking diversity seriously. And as much as we want to believe it is, Halsey is here to remind you that the scales still aren’t anywhere close to even when it concerns hair-care options.

This week, the “Bad At Love” singer took to Twitter to call out the hospitality industry for failing to provide hotel toiletries that are cognizant of all hair textures.

MORE: Why I’m Still Skeptical of the Diversity Movement as a Black Beauty Editor

Although it might seem menial or trivial, Halsey— a biracial woman— makes a valid point. The beauty industry has routinely catered to white beauty standards, which means in every industry where beauty plays a role, PoC are not being served properly or even taken into account.

The tweet didn’t go over without pushback, but Halsey wouldn’t let uninformed followers win this one. Responding to the naysayers, she wrote, “Who knew me acknowledging that white hair care products are the national standard (while POC are confined to a tiny aisle) would piss so many people off 🤷🏻‍♀️ not sorry.” And there the truth lies. As a white woman, I can walk into a store and blindly grab for something that will suit my hair, while PoC have to seek out a specific, small location to find what they need— if, indeed, there even is a selection.

But as Halsey points out, the problem is larger than grocery stores and convenience markets. It’s how an entire industry (or dare we say society) ignores the needs of PoC. Although Halsey herself didn’t give a solution, many commenters took it upon themselves to provide a fix. While some found the solution to reside in the hands of the traveler and buy their own toiletries, Halsey quickly noted how that isn’t always possible.

https://twitter.com/halsey/status/989684220971765760

On a more practical and beneficial note, some suggested a “pick your toiletry pack” option which would mean the hotel would provide products based on what you decide prior to entering the room.

https://twitter.com/hella_kell/status/989693114716585984 https://twitter.com/AppleWood1957/status/989737585462267910

Although it’s not a perfect solution, it is a step in the right direction. Earlier today, the 23-year-old shut down any rebuttal with her final tweet on the subject.

As much as people want to say toiletries suck for everyone and no one uses them, the fact that they only serve white people, or people with non-textured hair, is the problem at hand. Halsey has brought up a poignant topic that needs to be addressed. Hopefully hair-care is next on the docket for beauty diversity.

15 Celebrities Who Have Embraced Their Beautiful Facial Birthmarks

On one hand, birthmarks, especially when they’re on your face, make you easy prey for bullies when you’re younger. On the other, they give you a sense of individuality and specialness, something that celebrities such as Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie, and Eva Mendes know well.

Mila Kunis’ New Haircut is Exactly What We Need for Spring

Spring is here and for some, that means it’s time for a hair change. Even if it’s not dramatic, a little extra something can make a big difference and right now, we’re taking notes from Mila Kunis. While her latest trim and styling doesn’t radically change her look, it does add new life to her already gorgeous head of hair.

On Thursday night, the “Bad Moms” actress revealed her upgraded ‘do at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. And although her hairstylist, Chad Wood, didn’t change much from her previous look, he did relieve her of dead ends and enhanced the A-Line feature. By chopping a little off, the hair becomes lighter, alive, and ready to be shown off.

Kim Kardashian Responds to Designer Who Accused Her of Copying Her Perfume Design

After a week of teasers, Kim Kardashian revealed the bottle for KKW Fragrance’s newest perfume, KKW Body, on Thursday. The perfume bottle, which was made out of a mold of the 37-year-old’s body, was a first in the beauty industry, but everyone was convinced of Kim’s achievement. Soon after the reveal, the KKW Beauty founder star was flooded with accusations, claiming that she copied Jean Paul Gaultier‘s 1993 perfume, Classique. One of the accusers? Mr. Gaultier himself.

Hours after Kim’s reveal, the fashion designer took to his Instagram to post a picture of his iconic perfume, which also features a woman’s body without arms, legs, and a head. “Keeping up with the fragrance’s news! #Classique#JeanPaulGaultier,” he captioned the Instagram, throwing shade at the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star’s suspiciously similar design.

Likewise, hundreds of fans also noticed the similarity and called out Kim for plagiarizing Gaultier’s idea. Many cited other incidences of plagiarism by the Kardashian-Jenners, such as Kylie Jenner‘s camo streetwear line and Khloé Kardashian‘s bedazzled bodysuit, as evidence that the family has a history of stealing.

However, Kim isn’t taking the accusations lying down. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, the E! personality hit back at her accusers, explaining that her perfume bottle was inspired by statues and sculptures—not Gaultier’s perfume. Though she admitted that she loves Gaultier’s bottle, she denied claims that KKW Fragrance’s perfume was based on it.

“Sculptures were my inspiration, but I love that bottle,” she said. “It’s iconic and celebrates the woman’s body, but my inspiration was a statue. I wanted [mine] to be really personal with my exact mold, but I’ve always loved the Gaultier bottles.”

The middle Kardashian sister also revealed that she will make a life-sized sculpture from her perfume’s mold, which she will display somewhere in her house. “We were making a mold of my body for the fragrance, but we were also making it to make a big sculpture,” she said.

As for if Kim is guilty of plagiarism, it’s a “he said, she said” situation right now. Fans and Gaultier are confident that Kim plagiarized, while Kim denies it. Oy, where is the beauty police when you need them.

7 Clinical-Strength Deodorants for Fighting Body Odor This Spring and Summer

Body odor is impossible to avoid. We all experience it to varying degrees, but come summer, some of us need a little extra help warding off sweat … and an all-natural solution won’t do it.

“Aluminum-based compounds are the most commonly used antiperspirant ingredient because they plug sweat glands, thereby significantly reducing the amount of sweat that is secreted onto the skin, says New York City-based dermatologist and founder of SmarterSkin DermatologyDr. Sejal Shah. The most widely used aluminum compound is aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly.  Aluminum chloride is usually found in prescription antiperspirants, but is also found in Certain Dri which is OTC. Typically, the strength of the active ingredients is higher in the clinical-strength formulations.”

MORE: Why Nicole Richie Swears by a Strict Body-Care Routine

Fun fact: deodorant and antiperspirant are actually two different things. While the former simply masks odor, the latter is what keeps sweat from excreting. That’s why the biggest body odor brands sell products deodorants that contain antiperspirants; the combination of the two provides the most effective results.

At the same time, the side effects of aluminum have been disputed for years. Some say that although it aids in blocking pores and subsequently odor, it’s absorbed by the skin and may be linked to cancer. Countless studies have been done in recent years, but the general conclusion is that it’s more fiction than fact.

According to researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a part of the National Institutes of Health, there isn’t “any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates food, cosmetics, medicines, and medical devices, also does not have any evidence or research data that ingredients in underarm antiperspirants or deodorants cause cancer.”

MORE: The Best Under-$20 Face Masks for Silky, Smooth Skin

Dr. Shah also corroborates these findings. “Some research suggests that aluminum can interfere with estrogen receptors and estrogen can promote the growth of breast cancer, which is where this idea stems from. However, these studies were performed in-vitro and there is no evidence that it happens in a person,” she says.

“Further, a significant amount of aluminum is unlikely to be absorbed through the skin. One study found that the amount of aluminum absorbed through skin after applying aluminum-containing antiperspirants was much less than what would be absorbed from the foods one eats during the same time.   To date, there really isn’t any strong scientific data that supports the claim.”

So if your standard deodorant isn’t cutting it, and you need something a little stronger to protect against perspiration and odor, worry not. Give one of these heavy-duty, clinical-strength deodorants a try for those days when you need a little extra help keeping fresh.
