12 Celebrities Caught Smoking: The Dirty Hollywood Secret

Once upon a time, smoking was cool. The Marlboro Man lit up, and so did everyone else on the planet. All of the major movie stars smoked, and they smoked with relish on the silver screen. But then that all came crashing down when we found out that smoking is actually terrible for you.

But even with what we know about smoking’s harms, plenty of celebs still light up. There are those who support the image of smoking, like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, who controversially lit up for a photo shoot; those who influence their followers to think about lighting up, like Kylie Jenner, who posed with what may or may not have been a lit cigarette—or a lit joint; and those who are rumored to be full-on smokers, like Angelina Jolie and even Gwyneth Paltrow—yes, healthier-than-thou Gwyn!

Tarte Just Doubled the Shade Ranges of Its Best-Selling Products

Earlier this year, tarte Cosmetics found itself in hot water after presenting an unsurprisingly limited range of the Shape Tape Foundation; just 15 shades, to be exact. Now four months after being called out by pretty much everyone–including high-profile bloggers Nikkietutorials, MakeupShayla, and Jackie Aina, the brand is kicking off summer by doubling the number of shade options for several of its top-selling products.

Starting today, the Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation is available in 40 shades, a pretty big jump from its original 25. And according to Allure, five different undertones are also accounted for in the updated collection: beige (pink), sand (yellow), neutral, honey (peach), and golden.

We’re personally excited by this expansion because the non-cakey formula is one of the best out there and it contains SPF; perfect for this time of year. And according to a banner on the site, you can snag a bottle for just $25 (originally $39) using the code CLAY, though we’re unsure of how long this offer lasts.

The Creaseless Concealer lineup also includes an additional 16 shades, which means you can now choose between 30 in total. As for future upgrades, the Shape Tape Contour Concealer will be available in 30 shades come August, while the Rainforest of the Sea Foundation will also jump to 30 colors that same month (exact launch dates TBD).

We may just have to add tarte to our list of exceptional brands with impressive shade ranges.

Lucy Hale Debuted the Most Adorable, Tiny Elephant Tattoo on Her Forearm

Lucy Hale is living her best life. Since ending a long and grueling press tour for two movies, “Dude” and “Truth or Dare,” and one TV show, “Life Sentence,” the 28-year-old actress has been enjoying much-needed vacations in Arizona and Cambodia. And because no trip is complete without a spontaneous decided, Hale chose to commemorate her time in Cambodia with a permanent tattoo of an adorable elephant.

The elephant-tattoo saga began on Wednesday when the “Pretty Little Liars” actress announced on her Instagram that she and her friends would all receive tattoos. In a clip with her “Life Sentence” costar, Elliot Knight, Hale asked Knight what they were about to do. Here’s how the conversation went.

“Elliot, what are we about to do?”

“We about to get some tattoos!”

“Sorry, mom.”

And Hale kept her promise. Later stories showed Hale in a tattoo parlor with an artist inking a tiny, coin-sized elephant on the upper part of her forearm, near where her arm bends. Hale’s Instagram story also featured a video of her asking the artist to make the elephant’s trunk a teensy bit longer. “Tattooooo time,” she captioned the video.

Later Instagram stories show that Hale wasn’t the only one who received an elephant tattoo that day. Several of her friends also inked the tiny animal on their bodies. Though one friend tatted an elephant in the identical spot as Hale, another inked it on her neck, while others chose their ankles or thighs.

Judging from Hale’s Instagram story, it seems like every tourist in Cambodia is inking tiny elephants on their bodies, and it’s making us itch for one too. Cute tat, Lucy!

20 Under-$20 Sunscreens with Safety Approval From the Environmental Working Group

We often look at sunscreen as an optional “extra” in our beauty routines, but if the staggering statistics regarding skin cancer are any indication, we simply have to change our outlook. When we’re not shielding our faces with hats, finding shade, or simply avoiding direct sunlight, we should be slathering ourselves in SPF. At the same time, we also realize that not all formulas are created equal. And for that, we have organizations like the Environmental Working Group to thank for steering us toward the safest ones.

Every year, the EWG publishes an extensive sunscreen guide that requires in-depth testing of 1,000 sunscreen products across a wide range of categories, including the number of worrisome ingredients and whether or not there’s an adequate balance of UVA and UVB protection. Each product is graded on a scale of 1–10, with 1 being the best.

MORE: 5 Black-Beauty-Editor-Approved Sunscreens That Won’t Make Your Skin Look Ashy

This year, less than one third of the products tested garnered a “1” or “2” rating. And while we’re happy to have that very small pool of options, this also serves as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. A huge number of products sold stateside continue to include harmful ingredients such as the chemical oxybenzone (an allergen and hormone disruptor) yet claim to help prevent skin cancer—blame our super lax FDA regulations.

MORE: The Environmental Group Just Released Its 2018 Sunscreen Guide

The “1”-rated sunscreens on EWG’s list are mostly natural and mineral-based, which means they don’t absorb completely into the skin and literally act like a mirror, reflecting UV rays away from the body. And because we don’t believe sun protection should come at a steep price, we’re highlighting the best under-$20 options ahead.

Serena Williams Calls Out Body-Shamers Who Say She Was ‘Born a Guy’ for Her Muscles

There’s no denying that Serena Williams is the G.O.A.T. (“greatest of all time”—for those of you not up-to-date with your Urban Dictionary acronyms.) In her 20-plus years as a professional tennis player, the 36-year-old has won countless championships, four Olympic gold medals, and transitioned seamlessly into a fashion icon. Yet body-shamers still try to come for her and the muscles that made her a world-known athlete.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar U.K., Williams opened up about being body-shamed for her muscles and people, including her competitors, assuming that she was “born a guy” because of her body. Williams, who identifies as “the most girlie out of all [five of her] sisters,” also compared her body and how she’s seen to her older sister and doubles partner, Venus Williams, who is leaner and taller than her.

“It was hard for me,” Williams said. “People would say I was born a guy, all because of my arms, or because I’m strong. I was different to Venus: she was thin and tall and beautiful, and I am strong and muscular – and beautiful, but, you know, it was just totally different.”

In 2004, when she was 22-years-old, Williams wrote a list of goals for herself. According to a journalist, the list included winning the Italian and French opens, Wimbledon, and slimming down to a size 4. Looking back, Williams is dumbfounded that she wanted to be so thin. However, she doesn’t regret wanting to be a size 4. She considers it a learning lesson for her daughter, Olympia, that even her mom dealt with body insecurities.

“Oh God, I’ll never be a size 4! Why would I want to do that, and be that?” Williams said. “This is me, and this is my weapon and machine. But I love that I said that, because I can understand. I can show Olympia that I struggled, but now I’m happy with who I am and what I am and what I look like… Olympia was born and she had my arms, and instead of being sad and fearful about what people would say about her, I was just so happy.”

Why You Shouldn’t Copy Ashley Graham’s Self-Tanner Windex Hack

We’re always down for celebrity beauty hacks and tricks— like the secret behind achieving Rihanna’s blown-out highlight— but, sometimes we come across advice that makes us pause, re-read, and seek a professional opinion before jumping on the bandwagon.

This time around, we hit a serious pause when Ashley Graham said her hack for ridding of spray-tan streaks is rubbing Windex— yes, the household surface and window cleaner— on them. Those annoying, discolored lines appear when water, or any liquid, come in contact with the skin before washing off the tan’s initial pigments. And although it’s only a small window of time where this can occur, if not taken care of, the streaks last until the tan fades completely.

So, when Graham posted her streaky legs to her Instagram story this past weekend, we felt a little reassured that the tragedy happens to everyone. And, truthfully, we were excited to hear how the model rids of the pesky lines…until she picked up the bottle of Windex, sprayed the cleaner onto a paper towel, and went directly to her legs to buff out the lines. She continued to rub until the lines disappeared, and while it worked, we couldn’t get past the fact that she took a household cleaner to her skin.

We asked Dr. Ted Lain, an MBA Board-Certified Dermatologist, what he thought of the trick and he adamantly warned against it. “I would not recommend applying Windex to the skin. It contains 5% ammonia and isopropyl alcohol, both of which can be irritating to the skin, and can cause issues with breathing due to irritation of the airway.”

But if you really need to get rid of those lines and are debating that bottle of Windex in your hands, medical aesthetician Holly Cutler of FACE Skincare~Medical~Wellness, has a better option. “A much safer alternative for correcting spray tan stains is to use a salicylic toner on a cotton ball and wipe the area that needs correcting. The salicylic acid will break through oil and exfoliate dead skin to help get the stain off. The Glycolic Micro-Peel Pads by The Skin Saint are also a great option. The pre-soaked pads provide a higher dosage of active ingredients that are great for the skin, too.”

The final word: Don’t take Windex to your skin, no matter how tempting. Although it works for Graham, we wish someone would tell her it’s damaging her skin!

Emmy Rossum’s Skin Glows in a Gorgeous Makeup-Free Selfie

While some people opt to get all dolled up for a holiday, others— like “Shameless” star Emmy Rossum— take it as a chance to go completely bare-faced. Over Memorial Day Weekend, the actress went whitewater rafting with her husband, Sam Esmail, and instead of layering on waterproof makeup, she went without it altogether.

Rossum posted a selfie on Instagram after the adventure, and can we just talk about her radiant skin for a second? No blemishes or dark circles spotted; what magic is she using? It’s obvious that she’s a natural beauty, but with her big brown eyes on display, hair pulled back, and sans-makeup, we’re definitely applauding those genetics (and not-so-patiently waiting for her to drop her skin-care routine).

As effortless as the selfie was, though, Rossum noted in the caption that the rafting wasn’t all smooth-sailing. She wrote, “@samesmail went in the water, got trapped under the boat and i pulled him back in with my bare hands. ready for some cocoa and a drink-drink!” Looks like she’s got it all: beauty and brawns.

Chrissy Teigen Showed Off Her Stretch Marks Two Weeks After Giving Birth

If you’re one of Chrissy Teigen‘s 17 million Instagram followers, you know that she isn’t afraid to show her #real self on social media. From showing off her lopsided boobs from breastfeeding to laughing off her Snapchat nip slip, the 32-year-old model never shies away from keeping it real with her followers, especially when it comes to her body. So when the recent mom of two started forming post-pregnancy stretch marks two weeks after giving birth, she had to put it on her Instagram story—crying emoji and all.

On Tuesday, the “Lip Sync Battle” cohost—who recently gave birth to her second child, a son named Miles Theodore, with her husband, John Legend—took to her Instagram story to announce that, after months of expensive creams and skin-care products, she couldn’t avoided dreaded post-pregnancy stretch marks on her stomach.

The short video showed several patches of stretch marks on Teigen’s body, as the model lamented over her hips. “Noooooooo. I thought I did such a good job with my creams. My hips!” Teigen said in the video, adding a crying-face emoji for good measure.

Though we’re sure that Teigen’s disappointment over her stretch marks is real (as it is for most people), we’re sure, knowing her, that she’s semi-joking over the seriousness of the situation. Judging from her tone, we’re assuming that Teigen knows that stretch marks aren’t the end of the world. (In fact, she’s shown off the ones on her thighs on several occasions.)

And though we all wish we could be stretch-marks-free, it’s refreshing to know that even a celebrity like Teigen doesn’t have a “perfect” body.

Kendall Jenner Is Being Shamed for Her Weight and Tan Lines in This Bikini Picture

As a member of one of the most well-known families in the world, Kendall Jenner is the victim of many (and we mean many) internet trolls. The 22-year-old model has been body-shamed for her feet and acne. And when we thought that the internet couldn’t stoop lower, the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star is now facing heat for her “disgustingly skinny” body and tan lines. (Yes, we face-palmed too.)

The body-shaming began on Tuesday when Kendall’s older sister, Kourtney Kardashian, posted a group bikini picture featuring the sisters with a few of their mutual friends. The Instagram, which included Kendall, Kourtney, model Jordyn Woods, and one-half of the DJ duo SIMIHAZE, showed the bikini-clad women in a line mugging at the camera with massive water guns. “kamp kourtndall,” Kourtney wrote in the caption.

And though there was a lot to look at (the cute AF swimsuits, the almost-blended-in dog in the middle, the luxe pool deck), many users couldn’t help but comment on Kendall’s thin body and tan lines. Immediately, Kourtney’s comments were flooded with people who had an issue with Kendall’s uneven tan, which included a patch of white skin near her her majority-tan bikini-bottom area.

However, the trolling wasn’t over. Several users also took aim at Kendall’s weight, criticizing the thinness of her legs and body. As expected, many told her to “eat a hamburger” while others even accused her of having an eating disorder. (Not cool.) A few comments included:

“Kendall missed a few spots with her tanning lmao”

“The girl in the navy /red suit appears to be Anorexia get her a hamburger and some macaroni”

“What’s up with Kendalls white skin bush lol”

“I’m sorry but Kendall looks disgustingly skinny. Someone get her a burger !”

“Kendall is to fucking skinny. Shit looks nasty af”

“kendall missed a biggg spot while tanning”

“Kendal looked hot in the pic before this one but this one the legs and tan line ruin it and shes flat too she needs to do squats”

MORE: 8 Female Celebrities Who Were Body-Shamed for Their Muscles

Neither Kendall nor Kourtney has responded to the body-shaming. But judging from how much fan they look like they’re having on their girls’ trip, we’re assuming that the shaming isn’t even a blip on their radar.

PSA: Body-shaming is body-shaming, whether someone is “too small” or “too big.” To assume that Kendall has anorexia because she’s thin is dangerous. No one knows about her health other than her. Stop with the body-shaming and let people Instagram themselves in bikinis—with tan lines (because, hey, we all get them)—in peace.

The Best All-Natural Ways to Eliminate Bloating

We’ve learned to appreciate what we call the “extra love” around our waists, but bloating is still something we’d rather not deal with, mainly because it feels so out of our control. Seriously, there’s nothing more aggravating than going to bed feeling like yourself and waking up with what feels (and looks) like gallons of water wrapped around your midsection. Now you have to lie down before zipping up your pants and anticipate feeling even more uncomfortable when you eat later.

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for bloating. We can’t point at our stomachs, scream “abracadabra,” and zap it away. Beyond that, there are a number of reasons it could be happening, with causes ranging from diet to menstruation and even stress.

The first step to relief is identifying the exact cause, but if it isn’t an ongoing problem that requires professional attention, there are a handful of natural ways to kick the bloat. Of course, they won’t fix things at the snap of a finger, but with concentrated effort, they’re still pretty quick. Ahead, a few experts share the most effective ones.

MORE: Yes, Your Period Messes With Your Stomach—Here’s How

Drink More Water

It may feel counterintuitive to drink more water when it already feels as though your body is carrying more than enough. However, according to Thumbtack Trainer Kaitlyn Noble, this is exactly what you should do.

“In simple terms, your body holds onto water when it ‘thinks’ it is at risk of dehydration. When you drink plenty of fluids, you signal to your body the risk isn’t real, and it will get rid of excess water naturally,” she says. To avoid this, drink a minimum of half your body weight in water (more in hot weather or if exercising) per day.

Decrease Processed Carb Intake

We don’t recommend permanently removing heart-healthy carbohydrates (sweet potatoes, whole grains, legumes, and so much more) from your diet. These foods taste pretty damn great and help fuel major organs of the body, including the heart, kidneys, and brain. However, when you’re feeling uncomfortably bloated and need more immediate relief, temporarily abstaining from processed carbs (PCs) is a huge help. PCs are best defined as anything that’s been refined to a more consumer- or travel-friendly version, but stripped of its nutrients in the process. Bleached pastas, baked goods, and white bread are just a few examples.

“Carbs convert to glycogen in the body and for every gram of glycogen your body stores, you gain approximately 2.7 grams of water,” says Noble. “This is why cutting carbohydrates has an intense diuretic impact almost immediately. Try cutting out bread, rice, and other grains and choose vegetables (especially leafy greens) instead.” This will probably have a lasting effect on your diet overall, as you’ll learn to prioritize healthy carbs over the harmful ones.

Try Dry Brushing

According to many experts, exfoliating wet skin doesn’t always eliminate dead skin cells and debris. In fact, it can even fold those cells back into the skin. For those reasons, dry brushing’s been touted as a technique that not only improves the skin’s tone and texture, but also improves the body’s internal processes.

Noble says, “Dry brushing helps encourage circulation, which will leave you glowing, and also improves digestion. It encourages your lymphatic system to remove waste and toxins more effectively, leaving you slimmer and energized when performed regularly.”

The best time to do is just before a shower or bath. Using a natural bristle brush that’s slightly stiff with some movement, brush your skin in small, circular motions, starting at your feet and working up.

Relax with Mint

According to Noble, “Mint can help relax the digestive system, encouraging your body to rid itself of toxins and waste.” She recommends sipping on peppermint tea throughout the day to keep your stomach at ease. Another way to ingest the calming ingredient is by mixing it with water.

In an interview with Glamour U.K., Ashley Graham revealed that she loves mixing peppermint oil in her water and counts Young Living Essential Oils as her go-to brand. Peppermint specifically alleviates a gang of digestive challenges, such as bloating, cramps, and gas.

Suppress Your Savory Tooth

Luke Bucci, PhD, CCN, CNS, vice president of research and development for Ritual supplements, confirms that salt increases water retention, so avoiding salty foods makes a huge difference. “The big deal is to rebalance sodium and potassium intakes to favor potassium, which, by the way, is the number-one nutrient deficiency in the U.S. 95 percent of us do not get the Daily Value, according to CDC NHANES data.”

Noble also says that decreasing your salt intake has a similar effect in ridding your diet of the processed carbs we talked about earlier. “An overconsumption of sodium can cause an electrolyte imbalance, and your body may hold on to water as a result, leaving you puffy and bloated.”

Stock Up on Fruits and Veggies

This should go without saying, but fresh fruits and veggies are key to a healthy diet overall. And although there are some that can actually contribute to bloating, there are also plenty that do the opposite.

For instance, those containing potassium (bananas, spinach) help regulate fluid levels in the body. Also, water-heavy fruits and veggies, such as cantaloupe, cucumbers, and watermelon, alleviate bloating because they’re super easy to digest.

Other star de-bloaters according to Charles Passler, DC, nutritionist and founder of Pure Change, are yogurt (with live strains of friendly bacteria), “which has been shown in dozens of studies to aid in digestion and reduce intestinal bloating and cramps,” as well as fennel seeds, which “contain a compound that relaxes the intestines” and push foods comfortably and efficiently through the digestive tract.

Magnesium has also shown some usefulness as a supplement to manage fluid retention, although you can get plenty of it through leafy, green vegetables, too.

Apply Topical Oils

If you’re already a healthy eater consuming foods that promote healthy fluid levels and digestion within the body, there are also holistic options that may deliver timely relief. In an interview with Byrdie, “Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi shared her go-to topical diuretic for de-bloating before red-carpet events. The combo of all the ingredients is said to promote faster metabolism and increased blood circulation, although she recommends doing a patch test on the skin first to ensure the mix doesn’t cause irritation.

“So I buy a four-ounce bottle of Desert Essence jojoba oil, take out about a teaspoon so it’s not super full, then put directly into the bottle: 40 drops of juniper oil, 30 drops of grapefruit oil, 20 drops of black pepper oil (or ginger or clove oil, if you can’t find black pepper, though those two are really hot, so if you’re using them, you probably only want to use 12 or 15 drops versus the 20).” Once it’s all mixed, she applies to the body the same way she would a body oil or moisturizer.

The Best Ways to Use Essential Oils This Summer

Unless you’ve been totally unplugged (in which case, welcome back to the digital world), you’ve probably seen the hype about essential oils. People claim all kinds of medical benefits and awesome cures, but it’s hard to nail down how factual the claims are. If nothing else, we can confirm they smell good.

If you’ve purchased your own set of essential oils and aren’t quite sure how to use them, summer is the perfect time to make them worth the money. It turns out there are all sorts of uses that are summer-specific. For example, a citronella bug spray, a tea tree yoga mat cleaner or even something as simple as a spearmint breath spray.

Do keep in mind that people respond differently to oils, so you’ll want to be careful to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when it comes to dilution and adding carrier oils, and you may want to talk to your doctor and do small test areas on your skin when applying oils topically. And since we are talking about summer, know that essential oils can have a different effect on the skin when exposed to sunlight (called phototoxicity), so be sure to research the oil you’re using thoroughly or better yet, run it by your doctor.

We’ve rounded up some of the best, totally reasonable ways to make the $80 you dropped on an oil seem worth it.

1. Lavender for After Sun

We know the dangers of staying out too long in the sun, but sometimes the feel-good rays get the best of us. No worries — essential oils can help you out. Lavender is great for soothing skin. Mix it with water and apple cider vinegar and put it in a spray bottle for great results.

2. Citronella for Fighting Pesky Bugs

Humans aren’t the only creatures that swarm the outdoors in the summertime. Bugs like mosquitos also come out in full force. Citronella has long been considered a top-notch bug fighting scent, and the essential oil, which is drawn from lemongrass plants, is just as powerful. Citronella can be irritating to skin, so make sure to mix a couple of drops of the essential oil into a carrier oil before putting it on your skin.

3. Grapefruit for Bloating

The last thing you want to deal with in the summer is bloating, and some proponents claim that grapefruit essential oil can help reduce water retention. Put a few drops of the essential oil in a carrier like coconut oil and massage into the area that feels bloated.

4. Lemon for Flavoring Water

Staying hydrated is extra important in the summer. If you get food-grade essential oils, the sky is the limit for how you can use them. Fans suggest adding lemon to water for extra flavor. Peppermint and grapefruit are nice additions too.

5. Oranges to Purify the Air

Beyond smelling incredible, orange essential oil has antibacterial properties. You can add it to an all-purpose cleaner, but why not help to purify the air and make your house smell like fresh oranges by diffusing it instead?

6. Peppermint for Cooling

A little goes a long way with peppermint, and you can create your own cooling mist spray by adding one drop of peppermint oil to a cup of water in a spray bottle. Perfect for after a workout or when your AC isn’t quite cutting it.

7. Tea Tree Oil for Yoga Mat Cleaner

Summertime also means sweatier workouts, so whether you’re taking your yoga mat out to the beach or just sweating more in Bikram, use tea tree oil to help clean your mat. Add two drops of tea tree essential oil to three-quarters cup of water. To up the cleaning power, you can also add one-quarter cup of white vinegar. Mix together in a spray bottle and you’ve got a natural cleaning solution.

8. Spearmint for Fresh Breath

Stop shelling out for spendy brand-name breath fresheners and make your own. Again, you’ll want to make sure your spearmint essential oil is food grade. All it takes is a small glass spray bottle, a couple of drops of spearmint (to your preference) and distilled water. Ta-da! Fresh breath no matter how many hot dogs you eat at the cookout.

Lili Reinhart Shuts Down Rumors That She’s Pregnant Because She Looks ‘Bloated’

The second season of “Riverdale” might’ve ended two weeks ago, but the drama isn’t over yet. On Monday, Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty Cooper on the smash CW show, shut down body-shamers who accused her of being pregnant with her rumored boyfriend Cole Sprouse‘s baby because her stomach looks “bloated” in recent photos.

The 21-year-old actress took to her Instagram story to scold those who accused her of looking pregnant because of an “unflattering” picture circulating the internet where her stomach looks more bloated than usual. Reinhart explained that her body has changed and she has gained weight like any person, and that that isn’t an excuse to body-shame her or speculate that she’s pregnant.

“It’s unfortunate that one unflattering photo of my stomach circulating the internet causes hundreds of people to think that I’m pregnant,” Reinhart wrote. “Nope. Not pregnant. This is just my body. And sometimes I’m bloated. Sometimes and unflattering photo is taken of me. Sometimes I go through periods of time where I gain weight.”

The CW actress went on to preach body positivity and warned her followers against commenting on someone else’s body. “My body is something that I will NEVER apologize for,” Reinhart wrote. “My body will constantly go through change. And so will yours. And that’s fine. So let’s not put so much time and effort into caring about a stranger’s figure.”

Reinhart’s “Riverdale” costar, Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica Lodge, praised her cast mate for speaking out against her body-shamers. She ended her message with an empowering note to her followers to embrace each other’s bodies.

“Inspired by you @lilireinhart,” she wrote. I feel bloated 24/7, my weight fluctuates constantly — it comes with being a woman and should be celebrated, not criticized,” Mendes wrote. “I used to fear that day that people start publicly criticizing my body and commenting on my weight. I’ve suffered too much from my own self criticism and wasn’t sure that I could handle it from others. But seeing somebody as beautiful as Lili respond to public scrutiny by preaching and practicing self love is all it takes for me to overcome that fear. Proud to call her my friend. The 11 Best Waterproof Foundations You Won’t Sweat Off This Summer

Ah, summer—you tricky beast. We wait for you all year to come back and save us from the doldrums of winter, and you repay us by immediately spiking to 100-degree temps that threaten to melt off every tiny speck of makeup on our faces. And some of us need our foundation, OK? Some of us don’t have perfect, ethereal-level skin that can go without coverage on the beach or on sweaty picnics. But luckily, this problem isn’t really a problem anymore because the beauty world has blessed us with waterproof, sweat-proof, stay-all-day foundation formulas that actually work.

Sadly, though, waterproof foundation has gotten a bad rap over the years, thanks to some low-grade, early-edition formulas that applied like cake batter and dried down to a moisture- (and soul-) sucking finish that highlighted every bump and pore on your face. In a word, it was gross. But the new wave of long-wear foundations are nothing like their cousins; they’re infused with super-hydrating, skin-softening ingredients, like hyaluronic acid glycerin, and they can be worn on even the driest of skin tones without fear of your face flaking off.

Basically, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t try a waterproof foundation, if you haven’t already, and to get you started, we rounded up the very best formulas, below.

Kris Jenner Accused of Photoshop in Instagram of Her with Only One Leg

The Kardashian-Jenners are no strangers to Photoshop accusations. From Kylie Jenner‘s wonky curtains to the “spaceship” in the back of Kim Kardashian‘s #OOTD, the reality stars have no shame in editing their appearances and have actually admitted it in several interviews. Giving their love of airbrushing and FaceTune, it was only a matter of time until the family’s matriarch, Kris Jenner, joined the fun. According to fans, that time came recently when the 62-year-old Instagrammed herself…with only one leg.

On Sunday, the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star Instagrammed a glamorous shot of her look for the Monaco Grand Prix. The photo featured Kris in a luxe black-and-yellow coat with matching pants and her hairstylist, Ricardo Rojas, by her side. “Today’s glam for the Monaco Grand Prix,” Kris wrote in the caption.

And though Kris looked expensive AF in her all-Versace outfit, fans couldn’t help but notice one eyebrow-raising detail: her one leg. Immediately, the mom of six was flooded with comments accusing her of editing her picture and forgetting to put back her other leg. A few comments included:

“Why do I only see one leg”

“Where is your other leg?”

“Seriously where the hell is your leg? 👀

“Why do I only see one leg”

And while all signs point to a Photoshop fail, some eagle-eyed fans pointed out that the reflection in the bottom-left corner shows Kris’s other leg, suggesting that she didn’t Photoshop her picture after all. Likewise, Rojas shared the same picture on his Instagram. Though the photo was cropped, it showed Kris with the same angle and leg.

Of course, as well know, Kris could’ve masterminded the whole thing and sent an edited picture to her hairstylist. But we’re inclined to believe that Kris would be smart enough to leave out a leg. Either way, this one-leg mystery continues to puzzle fans.

How to Achieve the Perfect Summer Blush

Blush is the one thing we constantly debate wearing this time of year.  When the heat has gifted us with a rosy, but uncomfortably sweaty tint, we have a hard time believing that additional color will hide whatever the weather just slapped across our face. Of course, we have face mists, lightweight moisturizers and other cooling products to take care of the perspiration and redness parts, but what about evening out or at least complimenting our skin’s natural hue?

As with most products, making the most of your blush truly lies in the type of formula you choose, how it’s applied and whether it’s the best option, given your skin type and the impending heat. That’s a lot to take in and consider, so we have Ashlee Glazer, Celebrity Makeup Artist and Laura Geller Global Artistic Director, to break it all down for us.

Powder Vs. Cream

The first obvious difference between powder and cream blushes is the texture. Whereas the former is lighter and softer to the touch, creams are generally heavier, thicker and easier to build upon. And because their formulas are so different, deciding what works best for you depends partly on your skin’s most prominent traits (or “skin type”).

Glazer says that for those with normal/combination skin (i.e., skin that experiences the occasional breakout or seasonal excess oil), it doesn’t matter whether you wear cream or powder.

However, “if you have acne, textured, or super oily skin, use powder formulas, so the shine from the cream doesn’t pick up more texture, and the oil in your skin won’t mix with the cream, making you greasy. Use a powder blush with an illuminating finish for that soft glow,” she says.

If you want to avoid looking too muddy or cakey, try layering both textures. But be sure to add a sheer layer of translucent powder to the skin beforehand, so your coverage has lasting powder. As for drier skin, a liquid blush is best since it provides the same soft texture as a heavier cream, while still feeling lightweight.

Application

According to Glazer, the “two-finger rule” applies to both powders and creams. “Place two fingers on the side of the nose, and begin the application against your pointer finger,” she says. This will keep you from going overboard and placing blush all-over the face, instead of the places where color or highlight is needed.

From there, the process changes, depending on your formula. It’s best to apply powder blushes with a small, soft dome-shaped brush, swiping away from the face in soft wisps, as opposed to a harsh bakc and forth. For creams, you can ditch the tools and use your fingers instead (throw a stippling brush into the mix, if you’ve got anxiety about germs).

“After your foundation and concealer is on, dab a bit of cream either with your fingers, or with a small stippling brush. Work in small baby circles from the same starting place as the powder,” she says.

From the starting point–your pointer finger–swipe the powder or cream in a direction that best suits your face shape:

Oval: “You want to add width, so keep blush within range of the tops of your ears, and dust on the chin and hairline to contour.”

Round: ” Brush in an upward angle to and from the temples. This will chisel your features instead of looking too full in the face.”

Square: “High cheekbones to soften the angles of your face, hairline, and slightly under the nose.”

Heart: “Apply to apples of cheeks. This will balance out your bone structure, and hairline – leave out the chin.”

Blush for the Season

So, you know the difference between powders and creams, as well as how to apply each one according to your face shape, but is one better suited for the summer season? According to Glazer, there is no clear winner because both carry an equal set of pros and cons.

“Cream could be too heavy in real humid weather, but it’s super hydrating and gives a glow. Powder is great in the summertime, but can look heavy in the sun.”

But don’t take this too literally; like all makeup, finding what works for you will require a test-run or two, so you can really live in a product and decide whether it’s both weather-proof and flattering to your face. Also, remember that blush also makes for a great multitasker when you want to save time and money. Just be sure that whatever brand you’re using is safe enough to use beyond the cheeks.

“Laura and I love using blush as an eyeshadow!,” says Glazer, whose go-to is the Laura Geller Blush-n-Brighten. “Because the baked formulas are paraben- and mineral oil-free, they are safe for the eye area. This saves you time, and gives a supermodel glow all over.”

Also, remember that pinks and peaches aren’t one-color-fits-all. Once you’ve determined the best blush color according to your skin’s undertones, peruse some of the top-selling cream and powder options ahead.
