A Stylist’s Guide to the Wardrobe Essentials You Need for Fall & Winter

When I impulse-buy too many trend pieces, I find my closet lacks the basics I need for everyday styling. Wardrobe essentials are just as important as the latest It Bag or must-have shoe—and they can be just as stylish! As cold, hard proof, I tapped professional stylist Solange Franklin to give me the deets on all the fall and winter must-haves I absolutely need to look chic this season. And lucky for me, Franklin insists I don’t need to max out my credit card to look good.

Franklin works with VIPs and magazines every day while styling photoshoots and red carpet appearances, so it’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about what’s hot. After six years of having her own styling biz, she’s got all the top tips on how to perfectly blend your personal style with whatever’s trending right now. Rather than just buying something that doesn’t resonate with you because it’s “having a moment,” it’s all about connecting your personal tastes with the latest pieces.

“Take a moment, sit and think about who you really are, how you want to be, and then turn it up by 10 percent and that will push you to feel bold, but also feel like yourself,” Franklin tells STYLECASTER. “Open up your closet and see what is really in there. For me, when I do that, I’m gonna see rows of dresses…so, I’m going to head to the dress section and know I can experiment with dresses, whether it’s a little romantic or a little more punk. And that’s how I can infiltrate the trends.”

And of course, you can’t play with what’s uber-trendy until you’ve stocked up on a few still-trending basics. Franklin recently partnered up with Marshalls to showcase her seasonal faves, and she says the department store is where it’s at when it comes to finding the pieces you want without splurging.

That’s what I love about Marshalls,” she says. “You’re not gonna break the bank as you go searching for a new item that’s going to compliment your style, whatever your personality is.”

Below, I picked Franklin’s brain and asked her about her must-have wardrobe essentials for fall and winter 2021. Read on for her thoughts on lug sole boots, outerwear, accessories and more.

Lug Sole Boots

Need new boots? “Lug sole boots are my number one, I-can’t-wait-to-stomp-around pick,” shares Franklin. “I’ve already been accumulating them and they’ll take me from fall to winter.” She recommends styling with straight-leg denim during the day and a midi or maxi dress at night.

Slip Dresses

Speaking of great dresses! Franklin calls her trusty slip dress “A great transitional piece.” This one comes in six hues—and for just $30 bucks, you should probably snag a few.

Anything Leather

Joggers, blazers, jackets, you name it! “Leather just screams ‘fall and winter’ to me,” shares Franklin. This cropped shacket is a great pick for autumn layering.

Gold Chain Details

“My favorite detail for this fall is a gold chain on my leather bag,” says Franklin. “I picked up a bordeaux one, a camel one and a gray one at Marshall’s—and all for $29.99!”

Loafers

As Franklin notes, the chain hardware trend also works for loafers, the season’s top footwear trend. “It’s kind of that perennial schoolgirl, elevated fashion feel,” she insists.

Quilted Puffers

“Keep up with the puffers!” insists Franklin. “Quilted outerwear is super on-trend, so anything with texture. For my puffer, I chose crisp white. I wanted it to feel apres-ski, super chic and perennial, but also very right now.”

Classic Wool

If puffers aren’t your speed, try something a little more old-school. “I picked up a wool trench coat that feel very glamorous and fabulous, so that I don’t sacrifice any style for warmth,” says Franklin. “That will carry you through whatever kind of winter you have.”

Colorful Cold-Weather Gear

Last but not least, Franklin recommends elevating your current winter wardrobe with thoughtful and impactful accessories. Her picks? “Textured beanies, scarves in saturated hues, impactful prints and bright colors.”

The 3 Zodiac Signs You’ll Never, Ever Catch Cheating On A Partner

It’s an unfortunate truth that some people just aren’t faithful in romantic and sexual relationshipsso when you find a partner who’s loyal and committed, you need to keep them close! And most of the time, they’re almost certainly one of the zodiac signs least likely to cheat.

As you may have discovered from my earlier astrological insights, there are a few signs that have tendencies to be less-than-monogamous (in an unethical way). You’ll be pleased to know that, along with these frustrating findings, I’ve also discovered some uplifting details about three other signs that are the most steadfast.

While people with any of these three signs aren’t guaranteed to be faithful, you can rest assured that they are generally rather devotional, loving folks. It’s a part of their nature, especially if any of these signs land in your Venus placement (Hint hint—read your chart!).

Just like I mentioned last time, there’s no “good” or “bad” sign. In pop astrology, many of us have a tendency to think that particular signs are negative (Gemini and Capricorn have unfairly bad reputations) while others are positive (Sagittarians are for sure not perfect). However, I’d like to think there’s some good and bad in every one of us—what others see just depends on how we conduct ourselves.

I celebrate these three signs for their steadfastness and capability to love big. Each has their own brand of loyalty and way of loving that make them the least likely zodiac signs to cheat. Did you and your honey make the list?

Cancer

Cancerians are THE least likely people in the zodiac to cheat on their partners. Fidelity is practically written into their moral codealong with being protective of their physical spaces (Cancers love to get their homes just right for maximum grounded-ness), they are also super-protective of their relationships.

Cancers love everything about committed relationships, from the sharing of their sacred space to the small moments when you’re caught gazing into each other’s eyes. Don’t expect your Cancerian significant other to go anywhere.

Taurus

Taurus is the next least likely sign in the zodiac to cheatthey’re just too chill! It’s true that Taurus loves luxury, much like their Libra cousins: expensive liquor, high-quality clothing and frequent, fun sex are all adored by Taurus. However, just because they enjoy the delights of the flesh doesn’t mean they’re unreliable in relationships.

Quite the contrary! Tauruses swear themselves to their partners and share these pleasures with them. Their dedicated nature makes them excellent steady partners. When a Taurus commits, they commit with no holds barred.

Pisces

Of course you’re on this list, sweet Pisces! Your gentleness and big-heartedness are unmatched. Pisces is the most feeling sign in the zodiac (I call them “energetic sponges”) which often leads them in the direction of staunch morality.

Pisceans know what it’s like to be hurtagain, they feel everything deeplyand they’d never want to inflict that on another person, ever. Cheating is off the table for Pisces, who would much prefer to spend time with one person, getting to know them intimately on emotional, physical and spiritual levels.

Boho Macrame Wall Hangings to Elevate Your Space

’70s trends are dominating the home décor sector at this given moment. From vintage-inspired wall art, looming planters hanging freely from the walls, and of course, fringe-covered throws and plenty of macramé textiles, this era is definitely back in style when it comes to interior design. Indeed, the knotted-wall-art textile is quietly dethroning its trendy older sister, crochet—and it’s doing so just in time for your seasonal home décor refresh.

Macrame wall hangings give your space a bunch of different ways to add texture to your living, bedroom, entryway, and the list goes on. Macramé (as opposed to crochet) involves tying knots into a given fiber; whereas, crochet involves creating loops with yarn. Both methods result in a piece that feels both organic and complex—and absolutely perfect for those who dig the bohemian vibes.

Whether you’re looking for an effortless way to integrate some texture into your apartment or just add a unique piece instead of a headboard, this crafty trend is sure to complement your existing home décor get-up.

Colin Kaepernick Only Got a Football Scholarship From 1 College—Here’s the School That Made Him a Star

If you’ve watched Colin in Black and White on Netflix, you may want to know: Where did Colin Kaepernick go to college? Despite his seven-year-long NFL career, Kaepernick was offered a football scholarship from just one university.

Kaepernick was raised in Turlock, California and played played football, baseball and basketball for John H. Pitman High School, where he was nominated for all-state selection in all three sports in his senior year. In his senior year, Kaepernick was offered scholarships to the University of Notre Dame, the University of Tennessee, Arizona State University and several other colleges for baseball, which he played as a pitcher. Kaepernick told The New York Times in 2011 that he believed his baseball success made universities reluctant to recruit him for football, for which he had no scholarships by the time he graduated. According to ESPN, Kaepernick, who was 6-foot-6 by the time he graduated high school, weighed just 170 pounds and was described as “paper thin,” which is why he wasn’t a top candidate for colleges for football.

“When I got done [playing] there were parents coming up to me asking who I was and where I was going to school,” Kaepernick told ESPN in 2010. “It was hard telling them, ‘I don’t have a scholarship offer.’ Everybody was like why not? That was frustrating for me. Ever since then, I’ve had a chip on my shoulder and something to prove.” In the end, though, Kaepernick was offered a football scholarship to one college. Read on for which college Colin Kaepernick went to and what happened in his NFL career.

Where did Colin Kaepernick go to college?

So…where did Colin Kaepernick go to college? The answer is the University of Nevada, who was the only college to offer him a football scholarship. After he graduated high school in 2005, Colin signed with the University of Nevada, Reno, where he played for their football team, the Wolf Pack. “He just had this other dynamic that most college quarterbacks don’t have,” Nevada Coach Chris Ault told The New York Times in 2011. “He runs.” He started his college football career as a backup quarterback in 2007 and played in 11 of the Wolf Pack’s 13 games that season, which he finished with 19 passing touchdowns, three interceptions and 2,175 passing yards. In his sophomore year, Kaepernick recorded 22 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions and 2,849 passing yards. He also became the fifth player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s history to pass 2,000 yards and rush more than 1,000 yards in one season.

However, Kaepernick’s baseball career didn’t end after high school. In 2009, Kaepernick was selected by the Chicago Cub in the Major League Baseball Draft, where he had to make second decision between baseball and football. In the end, Kapernick decided to continue to play football for the University of Nevada, Reno, and chose not to sign with the Chicago Cubs. In his junior year, Kaepernick finished with 20 passing touchdowns, six interceptions and 2,052 passing yards. He ended his senior year with 21 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions and 3,022 passing yards. That year, he joined Tim Tebow, who played for the University of Florida’s Gators, as the second quarterback in the history of NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision to finish with 20 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns in the same season.

In total, Kaepernick ended his college football career with 10,098 passing yards, 82 passing touchdowns, 24 interceptions, 4,112 rushing yards and 59 rushing touchdowns. Kapernick graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 2011 with a 4.0 grade point and a bachelor’s degree in business management.

How much did Colin Kaepernick make from the NFL?

After graduation, Kaepernick signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a backup quarterback before he was promoted to starting quarterback in 2012. Kaepernick played with the 49ers—which he led to their first Super Bowl appearance in 20 years in 2014—from 2011 to 2017.

Colin Kaepernick played as a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2016. According to Sportrac, Kaepernick signed a four-year deal in 2011 for $5,124,296, with a signing bonus of $2,226,764 and an average annual salary of $1,281,074. After he led the 49ers to consecutive NFC championship games and a Super Bowl in 2013, Kaepernick signed a six-year deal for $114,000,00 in 2014, with a signing bonus of $12,328,766 and an average annual salary of $19,000,000.

According to Business Insider, Kaepernick received under a third of his record-breaking deal after he left the 49ers in 2017. The site reported that, in the end, Kaepernick received $39.4 million from the deal, which was 31 percent of the $126 million he was set to earn. Though there were reports that Kaepernick’s deal included $61 million in “guaranteed money,” Business Insider reported that the $61 million was only guaranteed if Kaepernick suffered a career-ending injury.

The site also reported that Kaepernick was set to earn $12.4 million for the 2015 season, however, because of the way his contract was worded, that salary went down to $10.4 million. According to the contract, Kaepernick’s salary went down $2 million each year he was not named first or second-team All-Pro or if the 49ers didn’t play in the Super Bowl the previous season with 80 percent of the snaps taken by Kaepernick.

During the 2016 season, Kaepernick restructured his contract for 2017 into a play option deal. In March 2017, Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the 49ers after reports they planned to release him in the summer. According to Business Insider, the 49ers were free to release Kaepernick each year of his contract and not owe him any more money.

After he opted out of his contract with the 49ers, Kaepernick went unsigned through the off-season and the 2017 training camps, which led to claims that he was blackballed because of his political statements. During a 49ers preseason game in 2016, Kaepernick chose to sit instead of stand during the national anthem as an act of protest against racial inequality and police brutality

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder,” Kaepernick told reporter Steve Wyche at the time. During the 49ers final preseason game in 2016, Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem, which led to other NFL players and professional athletes kneeling and taking part in various forms of silent protests during the national anthem.

In October 2017, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL and accused the league’s owners of collusion to keep him off the field. In February 2019, Kaepernick reached a confidential settlement with the NFL and withdrew his grievance. Since he left the NFL, Kaepernick signed an endorsement deal with Nike worth “millions,” as well as starred and created his own Netflix series, Colin in Black & White, a miniseries directed by Ava Duvernay about his high school years. Kaepernick has also written his own children’s book, I Color Myself Different, about growing up as the adopted child of white parents for Scholastic.

Add a Dash of Metaphysical Charm to Your Home With These Luxe Crystals

Different types of crystals and stones have long been touted for their alleged wellness-boosting and mood-improving benefits — as well as a laundry list of additional metaphysical properties. Regardless of whether or not you believe that crystals offer magical healing powers or not, their aesthetic appeal as home décor items is pretty much undeniable. For instance, turquoise, Lithium Quartz, and Tiger’s Eye have all been associated with promoting improved emotional balance, while Pink Opal, Aquamarine, and Celestine are thought to have stress-reducing properties.

Some advocates of crystal’s therapeutic virtues proudly carry around an assortment of these shimmering stones and crystals around with them each day to protect and improve their spiritual, mental, and physical wellbeing, while others just fancy them as whimsical home décor pieces.

Either way, crystals are all the rage right now, and they’re actually much more affordable than you may think. While we’re certainly not qualified to make any sort of claims that any of the below will improve your life in some way, we did go ahead and highlight a few of the prettiest pieces we could find for your consideration.

Zayn & Gigi Were ‘Super Toxic’ Before Their Split—Her Mom Wanted Him to ‘Treat Her Better’

A long time coming. Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid had relationship issues long before her mother, Yolanda Hadid, accused him of assault.

News broke on October 28, 2021, that Zayn and Gigi—who share 1-year-old daughter Khai—had broken up after six years together. “They are not together right now. They are both good parents though,” a source told People at the time.”They co-parent. Yolanda is of course very protective of Gigi. She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild.” The news came after reports that Zayn had “struck” Yolanda, Gigi’s 57-year-old mother, after an altercation in his home with Gigi.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Zayn was charged with four criminal offenses of harassment against Gigi and Yolanda after he allegedly “shoved” his ex-girlfriend’s mother into a dresser and caused her “mental anguish and physical pain.” Zayn also allegedly called Yolanda a “f—king Dutch s—t” and ordered her to stay away from [my] f—ing daughter.” The documents state that Zayn called Gigi while she was in Paris for Paris Fashion Week during the fight, where he told her to “strap on some f—ng balls and defend your partner against your f—ing mother in my house.”

Zayn pled no contest at the time, and was fined. He was ordered to complete 90 days of probation for each count, a total of 360 days. He also must complete an anger management class and a domestic violence program, as well as have no contact with Yolanda.

A source close to Zayn told People on October 29, 2021, Zayn and Gigi’s relationship had issues long before they broke up. “It was a super toxic relationship,” the insider said. A source close to Gigi also claimed that Yolanda’s disapproval of Zayn created “conflicts” in the family. “Zayn has a complicated personality,” the insider said. “It’s been hard at times for Gigi to live with him.”

The source continued, “They are both good parents though. They co-parent. Yolanda is of course very protective of Gigi. She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild. She has had some issues with Zayn. She thinks he could treat Gigi better. This is creating conflicts between Yolanda and Zayn.”

The Zayn source also noted that the former One Direction member and his ex-girlfriend are on “amicable” terms since split and continue to co-parent Khai.  “Zayn’s an amazing dad, and Gigi has said so. They are not fighting,” the insider said. “They are actively and amicably working to find the best way to co-parent now. Yolanda is inserting herself into a situation that does not involve her.” The source also added that “there’s no love lost between Yolanda and Zayn.”

After news of his altercation with Yolanda, Zayn took to his Twitter to explain the situation.  “As you all know I am a private person and I very much want to create a safe and private space for my daughter to grow up in,” he wrote. “A place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart. In an effort to protect that space for her I agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of a partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago.”

He continued, “This was and still should be a private matter but it seems for now there is divisiveness and despite my efforts to restore us to a peaceful family environment that will allow for me to co-parent my daughter in a manner in which she deserves, this has been ‘leaked’ to the press. I am hopeful though for healing for all involved with the harsh words shared and more importantly I remain vigilant to protect Khai and give her the privacy she deserves.”

Zayn also responded to the claims he “struck” Yolanda in a statement to TMZ. “I adamantly deny striking Yolanda Hadid and for the sake of my daughter I decline to give any further details and I hope that Yolanda will reconsider her false allegations and move towards healing these family issues in private,” he said.

Model Nyma Tang Is Helping to Make Your Drugstore Beauty Aisles More Inclusive

Encouraging beauty brands to be more inclusive online by creating videos, does make a difference. But that wasn’t enough for model and content creator Nyma Tang. She’s now working behind the scenes with CVS to make changes right at the source as the first Beauty Inclusivity Consultant. It’s not the first time Tang has worked with the company. Four years ago, they collaborated on the Beauty Mark initiative, which put a watermark on imagery that has not been materially altered to encourage authenticity in marketing.

“I felt like it was the next extension in what I wanted to do with my career,” Tang tells STYLECASTER. “My journey started with creating content online geared toward the lack of inclusivity in the beauty industry so to now go and do it with a brand as big as CVS and as accessible as CVS is amazing.” This accessibility is especially important to Tang.

“We have a lot of different meetings where we talk about how to make the aisles more inclusive, how to make them feel more welcoming specifically to people like me,” she continues. “When I first started my beauty journey, I didn’t see myself reflecting back at me within the beauty aisles. To now be able to be a part of the conversations and those boardroom decisions is huge.”

Tang believes drugstores have a responsibility when it comes to representation since so many folks, including Tang, start experimenting with affordable beauty right in those aisles. “Everyone starts out in the drugstore,” she says. “I think the role that drugstore beauty plays in the beauty world, in general, is way bigger than just prestige.”

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Not seeing herself in the beauty aisles was just the beginning of the discrimination Tang faced when she became a YouTuber. This just pushed her further into creating a platform that champions inclusivity. “If I didn’t encounter discrimination at the very beginning of exploring makeup, I don’t think I’d be on this platform creating the type of content that I create,” she says. “I’ve encountered a lot of it. The industry was very discriminating towards me and my skin tone.”

Part of her work as a Beauty Inclusivity Consultant is a new Masterclass series, which launched this week. The conversations spotlight Black industry talent and leaders across the beauty and wellness categories, including esthetician Nayamka Roberts-Smith — known as the LaBeautyologist — makeup artist Mali Magic and hairstylist Kahh Spence.

“Those are people I honestly look up to,” Tang says. “I learned so much from Nayamka about her technique and her journey. It’s going to be amazing to see all the untapped commentary from their perspective fields we didn’t even know.” You can watch the first video in the series, below.

Before I ended my conversation with Tang, I had to get the details on her favorite drugstore beauty products. Shop them all — starting at just $5.
