Fifth Harmony’s Dinah Jane on Her Spicy Guilty Pleasure & Her on-Tour Health Secrets
Dinah Jane may be starting a solo career, but she’s no newcomer to the music industry. After six years with Fifth Harmony, three albums and several chart-topping singles, Jane—and her four Fifth Harmony members, Normani, Lauren Jauregui and Ally Brooke—went solo in March. And though their hiatus is indefinite, it doesn’t look like a reunion is coming any time soon.
For one, Jane recently released her first single as a solo artist, “Bottled Up,” a tropical-inspired R&B song with rappers Ty Dolla $ign and Marc E. Bassy, in September. Aware that her solo career wouldn’t have been possible without the success of Fifth Harmony, Jane is now using her platform to highlight rising artists, like herself, with Xfinity and Sofar Sounds’ “Future of Awesome” tour, a 12-city tour across the United States featuring artists hand-selected by Jane herself. (Fans can request tickets on Sofar’s website.) “I love that it’s a way for new artists to showcase their talent, and the list of artists I picked hits every genre of music,” Jane tells StyleCaster.
The tour has already kicked off in New York, but before Jane fully hit the road, she took some time to tell us about her on-tour health secrets and how she keeps a balanced diet and a steady fitness routine while traveling. Find out more about Jane on-the-road self-care regimen—and her spicy guilty-pleasure food—ahead.
For breakfast I had: I ate oatmeal and had a green tea for a little caffeinated boost to start my day. Oatmeal is a good breakfast option for me when I’m looking for something quick and easy yet healthy and filling.
For lunch I had: It was a busy day of press, so I had to eat on the go. For lunch today, I had a boiled egg for protein and a side of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, which is my weakness. When I have time to actually sit down for lunch, I do try to make sure I incorporate lots of protein and veggies into my meal.
Today I snacked on: BOOMCHICKAPOP popcorn is a snack that I can easily throw into my bag without any preparation before I head out the door for a shoot or rehearsal, and it won’t spoil during the day. I also really love raw carrots. The crunchiness of both these snacks is very satisfying to me.
My go-to healthy drink is: Aside from drinking a lot of water to stay hydrated during rehearsals and performances, I love the health benefits that kombucha (Synergy) offers. It’s full of antioxidants and probiotics that my body needs.
My favorite workout is: My favorite workout is running on the treadmill. I love it. It’s therapeutic for me and is a good way to prepare for or wind down from a busy day. Hiking is great too!
The top songs on my workout playlist right now are: Right now, my go-to workout songs are “Bad Company” by A$AP Rocky featuring BlocBoy JB and “Watch n’ Learn” by Rihanna. For my cooldown after a workout, I listen to “6, 8, 12” by Brian McKnight. It’s my jam.
Making an effort to take time out for yourself—whether it’s working out or simply getting a good night’s rest—is definitely something I’d highly recommend for new artists.
The one thing that always gets me motivated to work out is: I try and have a really positive outlook when I’m working out. It’s an important part of my self-care regimen. Running is actually something I look forward to doing no matter where I am in the world because it’s time I get to dedicate to myself. Making an effort to take time out for yourself—whether it’s working out or simply getting a good night’s rest—is definitely something I’d highly recommend for new artists.
My guilty pleasure food is: My guilty pleasure is XXTRA Flamin’ Hot Cheetos! Everyone knows they are my weakness! I grew up loving every spicy snack and meal that I came across.
My favorite healthy restaurant is: When I’m in L.A., I try to make a trip to Tender Greens. I really enjoy their Caesar salad and adding steak and mashed potatoes on the side.
The three ingredients you’ll always find in my kitchen are: The three ingredients people will always find in my kitchen are Tapatío hot sauce, Sriracha and garlic powder. I love food that is full of flavor and has a kick to it. These ingredients can really spice up the most basic recipes.
The best part of my job is: The best part about my job is that I get to travel the world and create music that I love. In addition to my single “Bottled Up,” I’m excited to share more new music I’ve been working on. Stay tuned!

How to Go Platinum Blonde, According to Lady Gaga’s Colorist
Committing to a major hair change takes guts. While celebs like Kylie Jenner, Khloe Kardashian and Zoë Kravitz make dye jobs seem like a breeze, in reality, it’s a major commitment. That’s why we’re always thankful when hair pros, who bless the tresses of top-notch celebs, share the inside scoop that only the best of the best know. Just in time for your ‘new year, new you’ phase, Patti Song, the colorist responsible for Gaga’s platinum strands sat down with Refinery29 and shared her foolproof guide for how to go blonde and why it’s not as scary as it sounds, if done right.
Since the excitement of the New Year brings the desire for change, we suggest you start taking notes now.
Source: InstagramWhen we think of platinum hair, we automatically think it’s going to be highly damaged, bleached, fried and everything in-between. But Song gives hope that nearly-white strands can be less-damaging if done the right way. “People don’t have to be afraid to go platinum if it’s done right by a licensed professional,” suggests Song. “The process shouldn’t make all your hair fall out, stringy, translucent, murky and beige, or take four to five hours to get right [in a salon].”
Song reassures us that a proper dye job, even when going lighter, should take no more than 55 minutes, max and one round of bleach. “It shouldn’t take much longer than a normal color appointment,” shares Song. “Of course, anyone with naturally dark, virgin red or brown hair will cook longer than a natural blonde, but the whole appointment, from start to finish, shouldn’t take longer than 2-3 hours.” That estimate goes for someone with short hair that has an average density.
Before choosing your stylist, request a consultation. Song suggests asking pertinent questions to ensure they actually know what they are doing and that they do it well. Asking questions like “How many times have you taken someone with my hair color platinum in one go?” and “Was it successful?” are the keys to understanding the stylists’ success rate.
As for methods and coloring, Song prefers a virgin bleach application method that requires coating the hair in bleach instead of painting piece by piece. She also suggests starting from the ends and working up to the roots as bleach cooks quicker closer to the scalp. “Look in the mirror right after the bleach is first rinsed,” suggests Song. “If you see that your roots are lighter and brighter, but your ends are warmer and a little orange, it’s not going to come out right.”
Song suggests the right shade of platinum should be seamless and bright as white hair. “You know your bleach has been done properly if the shade doesn’t grow warmer in between appointments,” Song says. “The blonde should only grow lighter.”
Now that we are comforted that platinum doesn’t mean your hair will fall out, it’s quite possible you’ll see an increase of white and bright tresses strutting in 2019.
The Weirdest and Most Wonderful Fashion Moments of 2018: A Roundup
If you thought 2016 was a Dumpster fire, you were shook when 2017 rolled around. By 2018, you probably even came to expect it. But did you expect skanky royal wedding dress knockoffs? How about puffer-coats-turned-ballgowns? Flip-flop socks?
Long story short, the headline says it all: 2018 was weird as fuck, and while fashion didn’t necessarily suffer, it definitely took a few weird turns here and there. It was nearly as unpredictable as it was expensive—and we’ve got receipts to prove it.
Interested in a good chuckle and a quick trip down memory lane? You’re in luck. Here’s a visual recap of fashion’s highlight reel this year. Because 2018’s most iconic fashion moments were as weird as they were wonderful—and we honestly can’t look away.
1. Society’s Unhealthy Obsession With Belt Bags
#TBT to when Kendall Jenner wore a teeny, tiny and oh-so trendy belt bag on her ankle. Seriously, guys, that’s when you know we have a problem.
2. People Wearing Bike Shorts as Pants—A Lot
Courtesy of American royalty Kim Kardashian West, the bike shorts trend took the fashion world by absolute storm in 2018. But are biker shorts really pants? Jury’s out. All we know is they’re supposed to be just as big next year as they were this year. Cheers.
3. Tiny Sunglasses, but Then Also Giant Sunglasses
Wasn’t Kanye the one who said to wear tiny sunglasses in the first place? So why start this trend now, Kim?!
https://twitter.com/kendallkeek/status/1024429334709379072?lang=en4. Dressing Like a Race Car Driver
Vroom, vroom, bitches. (Disclaimer: This is not Halloween. It’s just, like, regular clothes.)
Source: Instagram5. Wearing Veils to… Not Your Wedding
Halsey, Rita Ora and Bella Hadid all capitalized on this decades-old trend in 2018. Is it the ’90s? Are they getting married? We just don’t know what’s happening anymore.
https://twitter.com/designsponge/status/967029180406943744?lang=en6. Puffer Coats Everything
Puffer coats, puffer bags, puffer skirts, puffer ball gowns. Is there anything that can’t be pufferized? All signs point to no.
Source: Instagram7. Celebs Stepping Out in Enormous Pink Dresses
Also, Lady Gaga. Also also, Beyoncé. Also also also, Kendall Jenner. Don’t get us wrong, we love enormous pink everything. But it’s happening kind of a lot lately.
Source: Instagram8. Popcorn Sweaters (Wait, Is That Really What They’re Called?)
Are we supposed to eat them?
Source: Instagram9. Justin Bieber Wearing Hotel Slippers in Public
It’s not weird to keep the complimentary slippers you get at a hotel. It is weird to wear them in public with regular clothes.
https://twitter.com/cosmopolitan/status/106752777971193856110. The Existence of Flip-Flop Socks
Definitely just weird. Not wonderful.
11. Sexy Meghan Markle Halloween Costumes
If you don’t already want to laugh/cry at this point in the list, you definitely do now.
12. Disney Villains Walking at NYFW
I shook. You shook. He, she, we shook. (This one is definitely wonderful.)
https://twitter.com/ladbible/status/101989997093213388813. Stilettos Posing as Crocs (or Crocs Posing as Stilettos)
Are they even comfy? Are they even cute? (OK, no on that last one. But still. It felt right to ask.)
14. The Most… Interesting Runway Season… Ever?
Three boobs? Yeah, whatevs. Pregnant dudes? Cool, cool. You’re confused? Yeah, well, wonderful might be a stretch here.
https://twitter.com/wptv/status/101008426193904025715. FLOTUS Wearing an “I Really Don’t Care” Jacket to Visit Immigrant Children at a Border Detention Center
Is the country over this? Because we’re not. We’re simply not over it. And while this one certainly isn’t wonderful, it definitely incited countrywide wonder.

8 Beauty Products That Achieved Next-Level Celebrity Love in 2018
With every year comes a gargantuan amount of beauty products for us to swipe, slather and exchange notes about. And while we find ourselves most excited about the newest formulas–such as Sunday Riley’s first-ever retinol–and celebrity collaborations–like Chrissy Teigen’s Becca line–we’ve noticed a slightly different trend amongst our celebrity counterparts. Though they arguably have the best and closest access to that new-new, they’re just like us when it comes to embracing cult favorites as part of their routine too.
Cliche to say, but yes, the rich and famous are just like us…at least when it comes to our drugstore habits. Go in for one thing and leave with 10, right? For some reason, this year appeared to be a perfect balance of the old and new, thanks to the makeup artists, aestheticians and hairstylists that continue to drop the deets on their famous clientele.
For instance, drugstore brands like CoverGirl and Maybelline staked their claim during awards season, while luxe, high-fashion brands like Pat McGrath Labs outfitted A-listers in the dreamy makeup beats that look as though they were literally ripped from the runway. If you like us are hoping to throw away half-used, expired products and start off 2019 in a carefully-curated, solid mix of high and low finds, here are the celebrity-approved ones that made headlines in 2018.
Aquaphor
We personally love using this multi-purpose, gel moisturizer as a lip balm (the lasting power is next-level), but according to a slew of famous beauties, its uses go beyond basic hydration. For instance, Sofia Richie revealed earlier this year that she uses it under her eyes to prevent bags, while newlywed Hailey Baldwin revealed she never goes to bed without coating her eyebrows and lashes in it. And in an interview with Huda Beauty, Selena Gomez’s makeup artist Hung Vanngo said he often mixes it with his powder products to make them creamier and more vibrant.

Summer Fridays
This year, influencer duo Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Gores Ireland made a huge splash with the debut of their Instagram-famous Jet Lag Mask. The ultra-hydrating moisturizer that not only makes for a pretty picture, but is officially the must-try mask for vacations or anyone with a crazy busy schedule. Though we were hardly surprised to see fellow bloggers rave about the infamous blue tube, it’s also garnered a sizeable celebrity following too. For instance, Jessica Alba shared with Instagram followers that it’s part of her nighttime routine, while Kim Kardashian is also a fan of the newbie. This fall, Summer Fridays followed up its monstrous Jet Lag success with the Overtime Brightening Mask…we can’t wait to see what 2019 brings.
$48 at Summer Fridays
Honest Beauty
Though Jessica Alba’s wildly successful, eco-friendly beauty and home brand has been around since 2012, this year marked a rebranding of the label, which included sleek new packaging and plenty of new products to boot. In addition to celebs such as Halsey and Kelly Rowland (they both love the Magic Balm) singing the 2018 BlogHer speaker’s praises, fellow mom and foodie expert Ayesha Curry also became the brand’s most recent brand ambassador.
$12.99 at Honest Beauty
Nexxus
If it’s got a Kardashian-approved stamp, it must be legit, right? In addition to running their own beauty businesses and continuing a reality TV run, Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall and Kylie are also a wealth of beauty info, thanks to their social media accounts, which are also chock-full-of impromptu beauty product reviews, both #sponcon and otherwise. This year, in the midst of multiple hair transformations, a couple of the girls got familiar with one of our favorite drugstore hair brands. Kim Kardashian started using this deep conditioner on her blonde hair back in 2017, and this year, her younger sister Kylie followed suit. Back in November, the mother of one told Instagram followers she swears by Nexxus to keep her dyed hair soft and strong.
$10.02 at Amazon
Pat McGrath
McGrath is a legend both on the red carpet and the runway, so it should come as no surprise that celebrities love wearing her products. This year alone, we’ve watched makeup artists use McGrath and nothing else for both the red carpet and major events. For instance, Chloe Grace Moretz attended the Hollywood premiere or Suspiria in McGrath goodies, while Cardi B.’s makeup artist Erika La Pearl has been using the brand all year, most recently in her client’s “Money” video.
$125 at Sephora
Mario Badescu
We’re personally fans of the cult favorite rosewater mist, but in 2018, a number of celebs used this brand as their go-to for acne prevention. For instance, Riverdale star Lili Reinhart, named this sulfur treatment as one of her breakout solutions, while Bella Hadid has also waxed poetic about her love for the entire brand in her Instagram Stories.
$17 at Amazon
Dr. Barbara Sturm
In addition to being a dermatologist to the stars, Dr. Sturm has also created a namesake brand that includes a cult favorite cream made with blood, though that’s not the only go-to for the stars. For instance, Jenna Dewan told her YouTube subscribers that the Glow Drops are part of her pricey skin care routine.
$145 at Molecular Cosmetics
Olaplex
Though we’re hardly naive to the hydrating and color-saving benefits of this deep multi-step system, a number of our favorite celebs joined our unofficial Olaplex fan club this year too. In May, Flower Beauty founder Drew Barrymore told Instagram followers that it saved her fried and dyed hair in a matter of weeks–three to be exact. Kim Kardashian also credited the product with giving her hair next-level shine, while also noting that she prefers wearing it overnight and rinsing in the morning.

A Maximalist’s Guide to New Year’s Eve Sequins
If I had to select one holiday as my favorite fashion holiday, it would be New Year’s Eve. The sequins, the glitter, the sparkle—all things that make my little maximalist heart sing. But styling New Year’s Eve sequin outfits can be surprisingly challenging. Layering embellishments on embellishments can get busy fast—leaving your statement-making pieces feeling more competitive than complementary.
True to form, I sought to tackle this sartorial quandary the only way I knew how: I challenged myself to craft four truly maximalist New Year’s Eve outfits—all of which had to use sequins in a major, major way.
Ahead, my attempts to do so—and a few tips you can employ if you decide to try these maximalist New Year’s Eve sequin outfits at home.
Sequin Mix and Match
I started by layering a multicolor sequin dress over a sheer mock neck top. The texture combination created a really interesting juxtaposition—one that felt simultaneously dainty, edgy and totally fun. Naturally, I didn’t stop there. I cinched the waist on my dress with a millennial pink sequin belt and threw a gold sequin blazer atop the look. Both colors evoked tones that were already in my colorful dress, which kept things from skewing too over-the-top.
While it would’ve been easy to pair this look with simple accessories—black heels, a matte black bag, etc.—I decided to do what any maximalist would: I added gold glitter heels, shiny statement earrings and a colorful, gemstone-covered clutch. These further varied the texture of the look; glitter, metallics and gemstones all feel distinctly different from sequins, but still in-theme enough to warrant inclusion.
To top things off, I added a pair of black cat-eye sunglasses. Because come on, this look deserved one simple element. (Plus, sunglasses are necessary if your late night turns into an early morning—no shame.)
Funnily enough, my first look turned out to be my favorite of the bunch. Catch me wearing this interesting, edgy and totally party-worthy look to every fun event on my calendar next year.

Sequin Meets Velvet
I tend to avoid neutral shades and simple color combinations, but I wanted to do something totally different for my second outfit. If my first look was about tried-and-true maximalism, my second would be about pared-down luxury. Because you can cover yourself in sequins without veering into over-the-top territory—like, at all.
So I started with a neutral dress. OK, forest green isn’t technically a neutral—especially not when it’s rendered in velvet and covered in silver embellishments—but considering my typical palette of choice, it felt neutral. I kept the rest of my look’s color scheme pared down, as well—opting for black over-the-knee boots and a black box clutch.
Since I rarely sport looks this color-less, I treated myself to some seriously fun embellishments. I layered beaded bobby pins in my hair and threw on a pair of massive silver statement earrings—both of which added a little party-worthy flair to the look without jarring with its understated luxe appeal.
Though a far cry from what I usually wear, this looks was super comfortable, versatile and definitely wearable—for New Year’s Eve parties and other lower-key events, alike.

The Little Silver Sequin Dress
Who needs an LBD when you can have an LSSD (little sassy sequin dress)? Though admittedly less versatile than the LBD, the LSSD acts as a go-to for any sparkle-worthy event. And what’s more sparkle-worthy than New Year’s Eve?
I found myself particularly drawn to this silver ruched dress, because it was basically a one-stop shop for statement-making style. (Plus, ruched styles promise to take 2019 by storm.) Though the sparkly fabric would’ve been fine without accessories, I decided to layer a crystal belt over the dress’ waistline. It made the otherwise girly-glam dress feel a little edgier, which created a super dynamic look.
Since it’s winter, I decided to add some cozy pieces to the look, as well. I mixed textures with a long faux fur coat, a feather bag and suede heels. I stuck with the same color family—pink—for all three to complement the all-over sequin dress, rather than clash with or otherwise overpower it.
dress, $107.92 at Lavish Alice / coat – editor’s own / belt- Zara / heels, $25 at Lulus / purse – Topshop
Rainbow Sequins
Sequins and comfort might seem mutually exclusive. Anyone who’s worn sparkles more than once has undoubtedly encountered a scratchy sequin snafu—one that’s resulted in sore red arms or itchy red arms (or both). But I’m here to let you know there are plenty of ways around this seeming dichotomy, especially if you’re willing to get creative.
For my fourth and final outfit, I set out to throw together a look that was as sparkly as it was cozy. I did so by starting with a comfy-cute foundation: a fitted black dress (that came with built-in removable fur cuffs). I then layered a sequin dress over this piece and belted it to tie the look together.
Since no look is complete without accessories, I threw on some heart-shaped statement earrings, laced a cozy velvet headband into my hair and grabbed an embellished clutch. I kept the comfy-cute vibes going with my footwear, opting for comfy heeled boots over stilettos.
