9 Easy Ways to Do Something Good for the World Before the Year Ends

It’s the season of giving, and many of us want to help others. Looking to make a positive contribution but not sure how? You’re not alone. Our desire to give back and the demands for assistance are huge throughout the year, but especially as it winds down.

“There are so many organizations who need donations and volunteers,” says Anne Bardsley, author of Angel Bumps. “I’d say choose a cause close to your heart. When something is more meaningful people tend to give more, financially and emotionally.” Bardsley recommends finding opportunities to be kind as the day goes on, so you don’t have to plan anything. “It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture to make a difference in someone’s day.”

Looking for a few more ways to give back? We’ve rounded up some fresh ideas.

Recycle Your Reads

Got a stack of books that you didn’t get to this year or already plowed through? Dr. Marlene Caroselli, a New York-based author, keynote speaker, and corporate trainer, suggests gathering those that you don’t intend to read again and donating them to a library. Libraries offer frequent book sales, which make it possible for others to get discounted books.

Pen Some Positivity

Looking for an easy way to brighten someone’s day? Write an uplifting note to a child battling cancer this holiday at iseeeme.com/letters. For every 50 letters received, a book will be donated to a child. The program is part of I See Me’s Letters of Love campaign, which was created in partnership with the Children’s Cancer Research Fund.

Contribute Caffeine

Ever had someone pay for your cup of Joe? There’s a website—Suspended Coffees—that lets you pay for people’s coffee anonymously. You may not know whom you help directly, but you’ll know you’ve done something nice and put some good juju out into the universe.

Give Warmth

Because it’s the end of the year and chilly in most places, now is the perfect time to organize a coat drive. Check out One Warm Coat, which gives you tools and resources needed to hold a successful coat drive. To find a participating location near you, search the One Warm Coat drive locator.

Make a Difference the Mobile Way

The internet is full of apps to help people do good. Check out Beam, which connects users with retailers who are committed to doing social good and giving back with every purchase. Others to explore include com and One Today.

Contribute Cash

Donating money is, of course, another helpful gesture, but be mindful of where you’re sending checks. Tracey Friedlander, an attorney from Maryland who volunteers with her family, recommends visiting org, CharityNavigator.org, GiveWell.org,and Give.org because they give information on charities regarding how they are governed and how they financially operate. December giving represents a significant percentage of all online giving (between 21.8 percent and 33 percent). Organizations really depend on giving at this time of the year. In fact, 28 percent of nonprofits raise between 26 to 50 percent of their entire annual funds from the end of the year. They need your help to help others!

Help Hurricane Victims

The storms that hit the U.S. this year are still having an impact. Looking to put in some manpower to help rebuild? Visit the National Voluntary Organizations Involved in Disaster.

Get Serious About Volunteering

Want to join a club that gives back throughout the entire year and can encourage you to do good all year long? Check out Kiwanis International, which has chapters across the globe plus programs for students.

Whether you donate money to write off on your taxes or single-handedly rescue someone from disaster, you’ll be doing good. Good news is that you can make the world a better place in a way that fits into your life—and enables you to make someone else’s a little better, too.

Teach Kids in Your Life to Give Back

Friedlander recommends gathering with family members—especially kids—to do good (it can also teach them about the importance of giving back and inspire them to do it throughout their lives). Whether it’s with your nieces and nephews, neighbors, or your own kids, check out the ideas and tool kits for kids worldwide at Youth Service America and generationOn. Families can volunteer at a pet shelter, prepare food at a food pantry, or deliver meals, among other idea activities. “While many are celebrating the holidays, others are feeling lonely and sad. A visit or kind gesture can be truly life-changing,” she said.

Olivia Munn’s Masseuse Thought She Was Pregnant Because of All the Holiday Food She Ate

If you follow Olivia Munn on Instagram, you know that she lived it up this weekend with actress pals, Eva Longoria and Gabrielle Union. She munched on tons of holiday food (courtesy of Longoria), played with dogs (courtesy of Union), went to brunch, and ate chips and salsa from her seaside balcony.

When she returned to reality after the holiday, she was met with a rude awakening from her masseuse who thought she was pregnant because of all the food she ate over the weekend. (Can we let the girl live?) The 37-year-old actress posted about the experience on her Instagram story in which she revealed that her masseuse pointed at her stomach mid-massage and asked the simple question, “Baby?”

After an awkward pause, Munn explained that she wasn’t pregnant but immensely satisfied from all the food she consumed over the holiday. She also playfully threw Longoria under the bus for cooking so many delicious meals. “I guess I’ll start my New Year’s diet today,” she wrote.

Of course, there’s no reason for Munn to go on a diet. If she wants to gorge on delicious holiday food during her holiday break (like the rest of the world did), so be it. We get that the masseuse didn’t mean any harm, but asking Munn if she was pregnant a low-key way of body-shaming her. On another note, Munn just made us desperately want to try Longoria’s cooking.

Layering Your Skin Care Doesn’t Have to be Complicated

When it comes to a skin care routine, there’s probably an order you’ve been following for who-knows-how-long. But the order in which you put on products can change how effective they are, and if you’re going to be doling out $$$ for the best beauty products, you might as well be using them correctly, right?

I figured the best way to identify a system that doesn’t feel complicated and actually works would be to track down a K-beauty enthusiast. We don’t need to wax poetic about the wonders of Korean beauty rituals that give women glass-like skin. What I do know is I want it without the extra leg work, because the thought of practicing a routine with upwards of 10 steps is simply impossible, given my on-the-go lifestyle.

So, you can imagine my relief upon meeting  Angela Jia Kim, founder of Savor Beauty and Spas. Her all natural brand is composed of organic Korean skin rituals that you can complete in a New York minute. In short, it’s the miracle I never knew I needed. Now, although Kim’s product lineup isn’t as extensive as the more traditional K-beauty ones, she does still advocate for a multi-step routine that should be applied in the correct order.

“Skin is made of layers, and products penetrate at different levels,” she says. “Layer in the proper order so that your products with potent ingredients are even more effective.” So, what exactly is the correct order? In the simplest terms, your products should be applied from thinnest to thickest.

Kim says, “Start with thinnest consistencies so they can absorb completely and deeply into the layers of your skin. Thicker and heavier consistencies are made of larger molecules and will not penetrate as deeply, so they should be layered on top of thinner products.”

With that being said, we’ve broken down the five products you should never skip and how you should apply each one. Read ahead for more of Kim’s expert tips.

Sofia Richie Looks Eerily Similar to Kourtney Kardashian with Her New Makeover

Despite their 19-year age difference, Sofia Richie and Kourtney Kardashian actually have a lot in common: They come from famous families, they’ve both dated Scott Disick, and, to some fans, they look uncannily similar to each other—especially after Richie’s recent brunette makeover.

On Thursday, the 19-year-old model stepped out in Los Angeles for a romantic evening with her 34-year-old boyfriend. For the outing, Richie dressed casually in round sunglasses and a gray sweater, with her hair tied in a bun. Naturally, the couple was photographed by paparazzi, with the pictures immediately circling the blogosphere.

But instead of discussing Richie and Disick’s much talked-about 15-year age difference, fans couldn’t help but notice that the teenager was slowly morphing into her boyfriend’s 38-year-old ex. Fans pointed to Richie’s hair (which she dyed from champagne-blonde to dark brown last week), arguing that she looked eerily similar to Kardashian with her raven locks tied back—a hairstyle frequently sported by the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star.

The pictures sparked comments like “Anyone else think that Scott Disick’s girlfriend Sofia Richie, looks really like Scott’s ex Kourtney now?” and “Sofia Richie is morphing into Kourtney Kardashian bit by bit.” Some fans even dug up this 2015 picture of Kardashian sporting nearly the exact same outfit and hairstyle as Richie.

Of course, it’s likely a pure coincidence that Richie sported the almost exact same outfit and hairstyle that Kardashian wore on a date with Disick two years ago. But there’s no denying that her dark hair ups their lookalike potential so much more. We just want to know if Disick sees the similarity himself.
