I Covered My Face in Black Girl Magic and Yes, It’s Actually Magical

Let the record show that I will always stan for us, and by “us,” I mean Black women. We’re beautiful. We’re innovative. We set trends. We consistently beat the odds. What isn’t there to love? When the “Black girl magic” movement was started by CaShawn Thompson in 2013, it felt like our truth (something we’ve always known) was being ushered into the social media era on an entirely new level. And as expected, it ignited a noticeable uptick in the number of Black-owned businesses period, but especially the best Black-owned makeup brands.

Today there’s no shortage of makeup empires either owned by a Black woman or with a Black woman at least calling the shots, consulting or collaborating on a limited-edition release. Some are just getting their start. Others are selling out in Ulta or Sephora. Ultimately, all of them are needed because in the year of our Lord and Savior Beyoncé, 2019, we’re still calling out brands who deliver 40+ shade ranges that include an embarrassing number of options for anyone with a lot of melanin. Anytime that I, a Black woman with lighter skin, can’t even find her shade match, I know it’s all downhill from there because the math just doesn’t add up.

With that being said, I can’t think of a better time than now to show extra love to some of the best makeup brands either founded or owned by a Black woman. Right now, a few have permanent spots in my routine and others are on my wishlist for fall. Here’s what happened when I literally covered my face in Black girl magic.

Step 1: Brows (Fenty Beauty)

Rihanna is part owner of her namesake beauty line, which launched two years ago and reminded other brands that inclusion isn’t a trend; it’s something that should be embedded into the identity of any beauty business. Her product drops continue to be breaking news and I’ve personally tried almost all of them. However, the new MVP Pencil & Styler ($20) is giving me life.

Because my brows are naturally sparse and microbladed, a spoolie brush is absolutely necessary. Before applying product, I like to brush up the hairs to make my brows look fuller. What sets the Fenty pencil a part from others is the teeny brush in place of a traditional spoolie.

I was skeptical, but the densely-packed bristles actually create a more uniform “up” pattern as I’m brushing; it even grabs the awkward little hairs I usually have to tweeze on the ends. The Dark Brown also matches perfectly, though I’m hoping Rihanna eventually gifts us with a matching brow gel.

Step 2: Coverage (Uoma Beauty)

Uoma (pronounced uh-mah) Beauty is founded by Sharon Chuter, a Nigerian-born former beauty executive who clearly knows what she’s doing. Ever since I discovered its lipsticks named after Black beauty icons, I knew I had to get my hands on the “world’s first Afropolitan brand.”

I decided to start with the Say What?! Foundation ($39), because one, the name is too good, and two, because coverage options for Black women are generally still a challenge to find. As someone with a barely-there vibe, I was hesitant to try a matte finish, so I did add just a few drops of my facial oil before applying.

Nikki Brown.

I recommend applying this with a sponge or flat foundation brush because matte formulas are quite annoying to remove from the hands. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this actually does dry down without looking crazy cakey. In fact, I had to blot my face a little, which lets me know that I probably didn’t even need my oil.

When you really blend it in, it looks like you aren’t wearing anything, so don’t be afraid to build if you live for a full beat. Come fall, this is definitely something I would use whenever I’m dealing with excess oil. (By the way, my shade is Bronze Venus T3W.)

Step 3: A Little Highlight (Danessa Myricks Beauty)

Because I only occasionally wear concealer, I go straight to a highlighter. I’ve already talked about how much I love Danessa Myricks’ Dew Wet Balm ($22). It comes in four different shades and delivers just a hint of color when you want a subtle glow that looks dewy instead of greasy.

This is something you can definitely apply with your fingers to warm up the product for better blending. I usually just apply to the tops of my cheeks, but it also looks great under the brow bone and down the bridge of the nose. My melanin pops every. single. time.

Step 4: Eyes (Pat McGrath Labs)

Okay, so I have a confession: eyeshadow palettes terrify me. The color and combo options outweigh my expertise and if I mess up, taking everything off and starting over feels like a full-time job. This is why until this year, I would only use Pat McGrath palettes on special occasions. They are by far some of the most gorgeous options out, but given how richly pigmented they are–and the fact that they’re created by thee mother of runway makeup–I would just chicken out.

When I saw the latest drop, this MOTHERSHIP VI: MIDNIGHT SUN Eye Palette ($125 on 9/3), I knew it was time to cut the B.S. and conquer my fear, because look at these colors!

nikki black owned beauty 5 I Covered My Face in Black Girl Magic and Yes, Its Actually Magical

Nikki Brown.

I decided to tip-toe my way into it. With a small eyeshadow brush in hand, I first (clumsily) applied “Taboo” (a brown ochre matte) to my lid. I figured since it was pretty close to my skin tone, I could easily wash off if I messed up. But I somehow…didn’t?! Since that was way easier than I thought, I decided to go a little further and layer it with Bronze Eclipse (a bronzed taupe sheen). It’s. Still. Working. I got this!

nikki black owned beauty 6 I Covered My Face in Black Girl Magic and Yes, Its Actually Magical

Nikki Brown.

Pat McGrath must’ve cast a spell on this palette because then I went crazy and applied Blitz Violet Orchid (a sparkling periwinkle violet) to the inner corner of each eye too. Add a little liner and mascara and all of a sudden, I’m wearing eyeshadow in the middle of a workweek for absolutely no reason. Only Mother McGrath could have this effect on me.

Nikki Brown.

Step 5: Lips (Uoma Beauty)

I am more of a gloss girl, but again, the names of Uoma Beauty’s BADASS ICON Matte Lipsticks ($24) pulled me in. There are 16 colors to choose from and all of them are named after famous black women, who were indeed, badass. They include Aretha (Franklin), a deep neutral, Chaka (Khan), a pink mauve, and Sade (Adu), a poppy red.

nikki black owned beauty 8 I Covered My Face in Black Girl Magic and Yes, Its Actually Magical

Nikki Brown.

Because I was in a fall state of mind, I decided to swipe on Tracy, a burnt caramel that is crazy-pigmented; as in you only need one swipe and you’re good to go. Because Pat McGrath put me in such a spontaneous mood, I went ahead and layered Uoma’s Boss Gloss Liquid Marble in Passion. It lightened up the color and matched my eye color, which I wasn’t expecting, but very into.

Moral of the story: Black girl magic is still (and will always be) real. Ahead, more Black-owned makeup products that should be on your radar.

Constance Wu Explains Her ‘Conflicting Feelings’ About ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ Getting Renewed

It was hella awkward. Constance Wu reacted to that Fresh Off The Boat Twitter drama and it was a lot. But now, she’s explaining her conflicting response, which she later admitted was a bit “dramatic.” Wu plays Jesica Huang on the American sitcom—a wife and mother who pushes her family towards greatness. Shortly after the announcement for a sixth season, Wu tweeted: “So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. F**k.”

The remarks on Twitter have since then been deleted, but left fans, supporters and even the press somewhat questioning Wu’s integrity and gratitude towards the series.

Fresh Off The Boat was Wu’s breakout role before landing the role as Rachel Chu in the Golden Globe Nominated film Crazy Rich Asians. Most would think that a continuation of the series was a thing to be celebrated, but Wu says: “People can hold conflicting feelings in their hearts—that conflict is a part of being human.”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she clarifies what was so conflicting about the timing of the renewal. “I had this moment of heat where I got upset because I had to give up a job I had been looking forward to and had been chasing for a while,” she says. According to her conversation with the Los Angeles Times, the role was in a play, as a non-Asian-specific character.

We all know that timing is everything. And while Wu is in contract with ABC for another two years, she claims to have learned a valuable lesson about her public figure. Her rise to stardom includes the responsibility of knowing what to say and when.

https://twitter.com/ConstanceWu/status/1127245692865523717/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1127245692865523717&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vulture.com%2F2019%2F05%2Fconstance-wu-fresh-off-the-boat-renewal-apology-explained.html

The Twitter apology included: “My words and ill-timing were insensitive to those who are struggling, especially insensitive considering the fact that I used to be in that struggle too. I do regret that and it wasn’t nice and I am sorry for that.”

She continues with the Los Angeles Times in saying, “It was moving to me how many people from the show reached out to me, and even on set … to say, ‘Just so you know, we love you and we know who you are, and you didn’t deserve any of that stuff.’ Because they also know that I’m an actress — I can be dramatic.”

Though Constance Wu will unfortunately not be starring in the aforementioned unnamed play, she can be seen in the upcoming film, Hustlers, alongside Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Lizzo, Lili Reinhart and Keke Palmer set to premiere this September.

OMG—Britney Spears Is Brunette Again?!

It feels like 2013 all over again. Our favorite blonde pop star Britney Spears might have just gone brunette again. Spears was spotted at Cecconi’s, an Italian restaurant in West Hollywood, CA, with boyfriend Sam Asghari. (I was just there and I did not see her!) An “eyewitness” told ET that Spears was wearing her usual uniform of white crop top—showing off the belly button ring, of course—and low-rise jeans. But what was totally different was her rich brown hair. Whoa.

I’ve always loved Spears as a brunette. Like most millennials, I’m a huge fan of hers but less of a fan of her hair. The blonde hue she usually sports is often brassy and as you probably know, you can often see the separation of her extensions. Brit deserves better than this! It’s possible someone got ahold of her and gave her a bit of a hair transformation. I say possible because the photo from the eyewitness is a bit blurry. Still, it sure looks like her. “She seemed super happy, smiling and laughing a lot,” the eyewitness told ET, adding that Spears “was with two security guards.”

I’m glad to see Spears getting out and hitting up a delicious restaurant. She recently posted a slightly cryptic message on Instagram, writing about the stressors of living in Los Angeles.

“Living in LA is such a trip !!! It can be lonely at times. You never know who to trust, and some people can be fake,” she wrote. “I have a very small circle of friends, and simply do what makes me happy!!! It breaks my heart to see the comments on my posts sometimes …. So I simply choose not to look anymore … let the clever haters do what they do best …. hate!!!”

Head on over to ET to see her new ‘do.

‘The Nightingale’ Has Audiences Walking Out & Here’s Why

Five years after the release of her breakout film The Babadook, Australian director Jennifer Kent is back with another harrowing horror flick—only this time, its subject isn’t likely to become a queer meme. Instead, The Nightingale’s true story details the dark history of colonization, rape, and torture central to Australia’s past. No memes here.

In Kent’s latest endeavor, audiences follow the story of Clare (Aisling Franciosi), an Irish convict on Van Dieman’s Land—the original name for the Australian penal island of Tasmania throughout its British colonial rule in the nineteenth century. Clare, her husband, and infant child are bound as indentured servants to one of these British colonists, an army officer by the name of Hawkins (Sam Claflin). Turns out, Hawkins—despite his handsome look—is this film’s monster.

Trigger Warning: The content below deals with issues of sexual assault/violence.

Our “little nightingale,” Clare, is the subject of Hawkins’ abuse in the film’s earliest moments. The Nightingale reportedly features “multiple brutal rape scenes in its first 30 minutes,” proving too much for some audience members to handle. While the film was only released in Australia on August 29, 2019, earlier screenings of The Nightingale saw countless audience members walking out of the film.

Instagram PhotoSource: Instagram

Director Jennifer Kent was weary about this reaction, telling Bustle, “If you break down the film in those moments, it’s people’s faces [you’re seeing]. And I find it fascinating that that’s what people are uncomfortable with—the hatred and the rage. It’s not the blood and viscera that makes people uncomfortable.” Which is an interesting take—to Kent, it appears suffering only hits too close to home when its subject is emotionally wrought, and very, very real. Yet should she be surprised that audiences had the reaction they did? Sexual violence isn’t the supernatural stuff of Babadook, after all.

Still, Kent believes that scenes like these are essential. It was important to the director to showcase the realities of 1825s-era Tasmania, with all its painful violence and racism to boot. Yep, racism. Not only do audiences witness Clare’s abuse; we are later introduced to an Aboriginal guide, Billy (Baykali Ganambarr), who also suffered at the hands of colonizers. He aids Clare in her plan for vengeance because he has been similarly violated—only this violation was one of mass Aboriginal genocide.

This indigenous perspective was a key to Kent’s process: “I can’t go in and abuse people who’ve [already] been so badly abused by not respecting their culture and allowing them to have a voice in the story,” she told Bustle. She took time to find a team of Aboriginal culture consultants—from Jim Everett, a Plangermairreenner who advised on costume and dance, to Theresa Sainty, who reinvigorated the script with a rare native dialect. To this end, Kent made every attempt to support the history and culture of The Nightingale.

It’s an effort that allows The Nightingale’s audiences to reckon with the ugliest parts of human history. And what better horror is there than the truth?

Cardi B Dragged Fans Who Believe Travis Scott Should Have Won Her Grammy

This revelation has us cringing. Cardi B reacted to Travis Scott fan tweets claiming he should have won her Best Rap Album Grammy. The “Money” rapper took issue with fans saying she “didn’t deserve” the honor following revelations from Scott’s Netflix documentary, Look Mom I Can Fly.

In the latest addition to Netflix’s growing content, Scott can be seen in the documentary backstage at the Grammys looking distraught over his album, Astroworld, losing to Cardi B’s multiplatinum debut album Invasion of Privacy. When fans began to react on Twitter, the “Bodak Yellow” rapper took on the criticism in a lengthy thread on the social media platform. “On my album I showed different sides of me. From my intro talking about my pass. To living my best life inspiring people,” Cardi B began her first Tweet. “Relationship songs while I was going thru my own relationship drama to shaking ass like Bodak & that ASS. Every song went platinum!”

She then continued, “I did it all while I was pregnant. Throwing up, drowsy, terrible colds and in a rush to finish it so I can start doing music videos before I started showing. I spend 24 hours for months sleeping on a couch with my pregnant depressed ass in a studio.”

https://twitter.com/iamcardib/status/1166776197356777473 https://twitter.com/iamcardib/status/1166776860807593984

The “I Like It” rapper then continued to explain that due to her highly publicized pregnancy while working on her album, the Grammys were an after thought for the artist, saying, “I wasn’t even thinking of winning or even the Grammys. All I can think about was …everybody is disappointed in me,” she shared, recollecting, “Am I still going to have a career after this baby? Is this album going to make me or break me? I need to finish before I start showing.”

Cardi B also revealed it was her husband, Offset, that stepped up to aid with her management. “All while I just separated from my long time manager. I had to get my husband to talk to my label cause I never had a relationship with them so we all came together to relocate me to Atlanta and Miami to finish my album before my stomach start showing,” she shared in her fourth Tweet of the thread.

She continued to say that she was also dealing with artists expecting certain payments for being featured on her album. “When I kept seeing the certifications of the songs going gold or platinum I was so excited cause my husband was out here asking everybody for a feature on my behalf so the ones that said yes thank you from the bottom of my heart cause TRUST ME ALOT OF ARTIST SAID NO! OR CHARGING 6 figures for a feature,” she tweeted.

Finally, Cardi admitted, “So when I won a Grammy for it I didn’t have no words to say but when I went home I started reminiscing on what I went thru during that period I was like YEA BITCH YOU DESERVE THIS SH-T! And until this day my shit still charting.”

The rapper also got very candid, talking about the words the late rapper Nipsey Hussle said to her upon winning her Grammy. When I won Nipsey said on a comment to me WHEN IS YOUR TIME IS YOUR TIME!”, she tweeted. “Now when I speak to upcoming artist or people who ask me for advice I tell them the same thing ! WHEN IS YOUR TIME IS YOUR TIME and when it comes don’t let nobody take that special moment away from you!”

Fans continued to berate Cardi B with tweets before she finally said, “Ya some grown ass men talking about dragging Cardi cause I won an award for a bomb ass album. Mind you I myself promoted ‘Astroworld’ on my page when it came out and have a good relationship with Trav while ya some small dick men talking bout dragging a girl.” We can’t imagine that this will be the last we hear of this backlash.

Gigi Hadid Is Literally All of Us Watching Serena Williams At The US Open

We identify so much with these pictures. Gigi Hadid’s reactions to Serena Williams US Open win is basically all of us. The model was full of energy supporting the iconic tennis player as she makes for a new run at a possible 24th Grand Slam title.

The 24-year-old served up some big emotions while watching Williams play American teenager Caty McNally in a three-set match. Williams lost the first set 5-7, but came back to win the second two with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory. Cheering her on the entire time, Hadid sat in one of the boxes of Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday night.

Donning an all-denim ensemble, Hadid offered up some fist bumps, standing ovations and a few words of encouragement while shouting from her seat. Wednesday night’s win marks Williams’ second of the Open, beating Maria Sharapova in a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Russian athlete. Now, Williams will play Czech tennis player Karolína Muchová in the third round today. The tennis titan is trying to win her seventh US Open title, 20 years after winning her first at the age of 17. Williams made it to the final of last year’s open, losing to Japan’s Naomi Osaka. Since then, however, Williams made it to the final of Wimbledon but lost to former number one Simona Halep.

https://twitter.com/BlogHer/status/1167449814348554242 https://twitter.com/SplashNews/status/1167094664471752704 https://twitter.com/GHadidPhotos/status/1167063132252098567

Hadid and Williams’ friendship actually goes back a few years. Williams presented the model with the Glamour Woman of the Year Award. Upon accepting the honor, Hadid had nothing but warm sentiments to say of the tennis great. “Serena, I just want to say you have been such an inspiring force and beautiful light in my life for so many years, and I can’t tell you how honored I am to call you my friend,” Hadid shared in her acceptance speech.

We cannot wait to see Hadid at more matches supporting Williams along the way.
