If there’s anything I can’t get enough of, it’s sneakers. No matter the day, event or outfit, sneakers are always my number one footwear choice. So, of course, figuring out the 2020 sneaker trends was high up on my list of sartorial priorities when it came to shopping this year. I spent tons of time analyzing the sneaker trends spotted on the runway, and after all my research, I can safely say that the 2020 sneaker trends are cooler than I could ever hope to be—and then some.
Before I dive in, an ode to sneakers in general. Seriously, sneakers are the answer to every fashion qualm; I mean, they’re cute, comfy and endlessly trendy, so what’s not to love? Pair them with your favorite dress, cute wide-leg pants or skinny jeans. The possibilities are absolutely endless! Whether you’re on the hunt for casual sneakers to wear running errands, motivating kicks to help you hit the gym, or just the perfect finishing touch to your Instagram photoshoot ‘fit, I guarantee the shoes on this list will get your attention.
A few of of this year’s sneaker trends are continuations of last year’s top street style looks, but with a bit of a twist. Whereas chunky soles were in last year, this year fully chunky silhouettes up the ante with a fashion-forward twist. Plus, an ’80s-inspired take on the trend sees the return of platform sneakers. Short girls, rejoice!
Speaking of throwbacks, old-school colorways and details are trending, too. Fingers crossed you still fit in your Skechers from high school—if not, it might be time to buy a new pair! I’d highly recommend the ones with velcro straps, and no, I’m not joking. Retro kicks are in, people!
Below, you’ll find the five 2020 sneaker trends worth trying this year, plus multiple ways to shop each. Enjoy!
1. Sunset Hues
We saw sunset hues all over the runways during fashion month, and the colorway works for 2020’s sneaker trends, too. The look is basically like walking around with the most beautiful part of nature on your feet—and who wouldn’t want that?
Buy: APL Techloom Pro Sneakers $140These APL Techloom Pro Sneakers come in tons of gorgeous colors, including this dreamy sunset-esque combo of Laser Red/Morning Mist/White.
Cariuma’s second Pantone collaboration features their sustainable kicks in gorgeous autumnal colorways, like these stunning Picante Canvas Sneakers.
2. Old-School Throwbacks
In fashion, everything old becomes new again, and the 2020 sneaker trends are absolutely no exception to this rule. Expect details from your childhood sneakers to make a welcome comeback, like retro colorways, velcro straps and other old-school details.
Everything about the Vintage Havana Claudia Sneaker is a welcome blast from the past, from the velcro straps to the green, taupe and white colorway.
Skechers was the only sneaker brand I wanted to shop as a kid, and TBH? Their shoes still rock. Treat Adult You to Childhood You’s dream kicks with the Skechers Solar Fuse Sneakers.
3. (More) Chunky Sneakers
The 2020 sneaker trends are proof that the chunky sneaker trend will never die. Don’t even think about rocking a street style ‘fit without a pair of chunky kicks—just opt for some with fashion-forward details so you don’t give off too much dad energy.
Buy: ASH Eclipse Bis Sneaker $135It’s safe to say my dad wouldn’t be caught dead in a chunky shoe as edgy as the ASH Eclipse Bis Sneaker. BTW, these colors give me major Shego from Kim Possible energy. Anyone else?
Buy: LAST Sprint Leather Snake Sneakers $130The textured animal print and oversized pink laces on these LAST Sprint Leather Snake Sneakers make them the ultimate fashion-forward take on the chunky sole trend.
4. Pumped-Up Platforms
It’s time to get tall, y’all. Platform sneakers are in for 2020, and you’re probably already seeing them everywhere. For all my shorties out there, this is a dream come true! Plus, platforms are way easier to walk in than sky-high heels, so you won’t worry about falling over while you’re out on the town.
Buy: SeaVees Baja Platform Mullholland $99.90For a pop of animal print, go for the SeaVees Baja Platform Mullholland. The calf hair uppers look and feel so luxe.
Buy: Superga 2790 Nappaleaw Sneaker $59.96If you’re more of a classic white kicks kind of person, opt for the Superga 2790 Nappaleaw Sneaker instead. Clean and crisp, with a chunky white sole to boot.
5. To The Max
This just in—statement sneakers are the new statement heels, and you can amplify any ensemble with a pair of maximalist kicks. Rock with a basic tee and jeans, or pair your bold footwear with an equally eye-catching outfit and watch the compliments pour in.
Bold colors, animal print, tons of texture, a chunky silhouette…what more could you want on these Puma RS-X Unexpected Mixes Sneakers? These kicks are maximalism done right.
For a more neon color palette, consider these Fila Ray Tracer Sneakers. I love the way the black makes the vibrant shades pop—especially those lime and teal striped laces.
