All is not well in Hollywood, and the celebrity breakups of 2021 show that. So far in 2021, we’ve seen celebrity couples like Shia Labeouf and Margaret Qualley, and Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman call it quits. And as we know from past years, there will be more celebrity breakups to come in 2021.
Before we dive into all the couples who have split in the past year, let’s look back at the celebrity couples we lost in 2020. Everyone and their moms knows that 2020 was a dumpster fire, so, as expected, there were a lot of celebrity splits that shook us to our core. Some examples include Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich (who split two months after their engagement); Kelly Clarkson and manager Brandon Blackstock (who are in a legal battle over alleged unpaid commissions); and Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler (who split in 2020 after almost seven years of marriage.)
Now that we’re in 2021, we’re sad to report that more celebrity couples have come and gone. From married celebrity couples to matches that we made on reality TV, the biggest celebrity breakups of 2021 is one sad list. Ahead, are the most shocking celebrity splits from the past year so far.
Elon Musk & Grimes

Page Six reported on September 24, 2021, that Elon Musk and Grimes had broken up after three years of dating. Musk confirmed the breakup and told Page Six that he and Grimes had “semi-separated” but remain on good terms. The split came a year after the birth of their son, X Æ A-Xii Musk. “We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms,” Musk told Page Six. “It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in LA. She’s staying with me now and Baby X is in the adjacent room.”
Phoebe Dynevor & Pete Davidson

The Sun reported on August 15 that Phoebe Dynevor and Pete Davidson had split after five months of dating due to long distance. Dynevor, who stars in Bridgerton, lives in England, while Davidson, who is a cast member on Saturday Night Live, is based in New York. “Their mates think they make a great couple, but the distance has made it completely unworkable,” an insider told The Sun. “They had fun and will remain close, but unless something drastic changes, their relationship won’t recover.”
The source continued, “It was wild while it lasted, and they both really care for each other. But the distance has put a strain on them.”
Olivia Jade & Jackson Guthy

Olivia Jade confirmed on her Instagram Story on August 12 that she and her boyfriend, Jackson Guthy, had split after two years of dating. In her post, Olivia responded to a follower who asked, “R u single?” She replied, “I am indeed,” alongside a photo of her smiling with her arm in the air. Olivia later offered dating advice to women in their 20s. “You’re still so young!” she wrote. “Have fun, be safe, & let the universe do it’s [sic] thingggg. What is meant to be will be.”
This isn’t the first time Olivia and Jackson have broken up. In May 2019, Us Weekly reported that Jackson broke up with Olivia after her parents, Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Gianulli, were arrested for their part in the college admissions scandal. “Jackson broke up with Olivia because it was all getting to be too much for him,” a source said at the time. “It wasn’t necessarily affecting his career, but the fact that he couldn’t be seen out in public with Olivia was difficult.” They got back together in August 2019 before their split two years later.
Tyler Cameron & Camila Kendra
Source: InstagramPage Six confirmed on August 9 that Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron and his girlfriend, model Camila Kendra, had split after eight months of dating. “Things took a turn,” the insider said. A source also told Us Weekly, “Things were going well until they weren’t. Friends were surprised things ended so quickly.”
Prior to the split, Cameron and Kendra unfollowed each other on Instagram. Kendra also unfollowed Cameron’s brother, Ryan. The split also came after Cameron was photographed at a bar in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, with another woman. A source told the Instagram account @DeuxMoi that “blonde girl [was] all over him.”
The breakup also came after Cameron called Kendra his “soulmate” on an episode of Watch What Happens Live.” Do I believe in soulmates? Yes! I have two of them right here,” Cameron said, referring to Kendra and his best friend, Matt James. During the episode, Cameron also told host Andy Cohen that he’s been in love “twice”—once with Kendra.
Shanna Moakler & Matthew Rondeau

On Thursday, July 29, model Matthew Rondeau broke the news that he and on-again, off-again girlfriend Shanna Moakler called it quits “months ago.” Rondeau, who started dating Travis Barker’s ex-wife in 2020, told Life & Style that he was the one to call things off with the mother of two and that he’s “happier” than he’s “ever been” following their split. “I’m focusing truly on finding myself again as a person emotionally and mentally,” he added.
Rondeau continued, “I hope she finds what she’s looking for, but it’s not going to be me. Sources who spoke to People, however, revealed that “it’s not true he broke up with her” this time around. “She’s focused on her own life and happiness, not on Matthew,” the insider said. “She’s busy with work and is moving on.” Moakler, for her part, did not respond to requests for comment at the time.
Scooter Braun & Yael Cohen

News broke on July 10, 2021, that Scooter Braun and his wife, Yael Cohen, had split after seven years of marriage. A source told People at the time that Braun, who manages Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande and is known for his public feud with Taylor Swift, and Cohen could reconcile after time apart. “Their friendship is the best it’s ever been but they’re taking some time apart to sort things out,” the insider said. “So many couples went through this during the pandemic. They love each other and just need some time apart and will hopefully bounce back for their kids.”
Braun and Cohen share three kids: sons Jagger and Levi, and daughter Hart. News of their split came four days after the former couple celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary. “If just for the kids you have given me everything. But thanks to you I have grown, I have been pushed to be the best version of myself and to continue growing and learning. That all happened because you came in to my life. 7 years,” Braun captioned an Instagram post at the time. The adventure is just beginning. Thank you Yae. I love you. Happy anniversary.”
Matthew Perry & Molly Hurwitz

Six months after their engagement, Matthew Perry and his fiancée, Molly Hurwitz, have broken up. Perry confirmed the split to People on June 1, 2021, hinting that he was the one who ended the relationship. “Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them,” he said. “I wish Molly the best.” Perry, 51, proposed to Hurwitz, 29, in November 2020. Their engagement came a year after news broke about their relationship.
“[Molly is] telling friends that she is not in it for fame, but she secretly loves the attention she’s been getting from their relationship,” a source Us Weekly in January 2020. “The guys she has dated in the past have all been in the entertainment industry.”
Another source added, “His inner circle have wanted to see him settle down for a long time, especially Courteney Cox, and they hope he and Molly go the distance. Molly prefers nights in his private cinema watching films and eating home-cooked meals than going out. … She brought him to a place where he’s positive and confident. Nobody can remember seeing him this happy. He’s got a spring in his step that wasn’t there before.”
John Mulaney & Anna Marie Tendler

News broke on May 10, 2021, that John Mulaney and his wife, Anna Marie Tendler, are divorcing after six years of marriage. According to Page Six, Mulaney asked Tendler for a divorce three months before the news broke. A spokesperson for Mulaney also confirmed the split to Page Six. “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work,” the rep said.
In a statement through her spokesperson, Tendler, an artist, told Page Six that she’s “heartbroken” that Mulaney decided to end their marriage. “I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery,” she said.
Mulaney and Tendler’s divorce comes less than a year after the comedian entered a rehab facility in December 2021 for cocaine and alcohol addiction. He completed the 60-day program in February 2021 and entered an outpatient care center, according to Page Six. “John has completed 60 days in rehab, and now he’s in outpatient sober care. He is doing well, although he is still not ready to return to work,” a source told the newspaper at the time.
Bill Gates & Melinda Gates
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and philanthropist Melina Gates (née French) announced they were ending their marriage of 27 years in a statement on Monday, May 3. The pair—who share daughters Jennifer, 24, and Phoebe, 18, and son Rory, 21—shared the message on social media.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” Bill and Melinda’s statement began. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.”

J-Lo and A-Rod had a rumored split in March 2021, two years after their engagement. According to Page Six, the couple—who got engaged in March 2019 after two years of dating—had been on the rocks for a while and the two weren’t even in the same location. “He’s now in Miami getting ready for baseball season, and she’s filming her movie in the Dominican Republic,” a source told the newspaper at the time. The couple, who had postponed their wedding twice, according to Page Six, were last photographed hugging in the Dominican Republic in February 2021. A month after their rumored split, Lopez and Rodriguez confirmed they had ended their engagement in a statement to TODAY on April 15.
“We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so,” the statement read. “We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”
Lopez and Rodriguez’s split comes after the Major League Baseball player was accused of cheating on the “On the Floor” singer with Southern Charm star Madison LeCroy. At the season 7 Southern Charm reunion in February, Madison’s co-star, Craig Conover, claimed that she “flew to Miami to fuck” an unnamed married, former Major League Baseball player that fans believe was Rodriguez. Madison later confessed to DMing and FaceTiming with Rodriguez, but denied that their relationship was romantic. Sources close to A-rod also reported at the time that Madison and Rodriguez communicated but never met in person. “He’s never physically cheated on his fiancée with me…[I’ve] talked to him randomly, but not consistent,” Madison told Page Six at the time.
Saweetie & Quavo

Rap power couple Saweetie and Quavo officially called it quits in March 2021. Saweetie confirmed the split herself, shortly after she and the Migos rapper sparked breakup rumors by unfollowing each other on social media. The “Best Friend” rapper announced that she was “single” in a tweet after hinting that her ex was unfaithful to her.
“I’ve endured too much betrayal and hurt behind the scenes for a false narrative to be circulating that degrades my character,” Saweetie tweeted. “Presents don’t band aid scars and the love isn’t real when the intimacy is given to other women.” In a second tweet, she added, “I emotionally checked out a long time ago and have walked away with a deep sense of peace and freedom. Excited for this new chapter of elevation.”

Combs, who is the son of Sean “Diddy” Combs, previously dated Saweetie before her relationship with Quavo.

E! News reported in February 2021 that Selling Sunset‘s Chrishell Stause and Dancing with the Stars‘ Keo Motsepe split “very recently.” “They may get back together but likely, at this point, they won’t,” the insider said.
The source continued, “They had a fun time together but in the end, decided it would be best if they part ways. They are still friendly and cordial. It wasn’t a messy breakup, just wasn’t the right fit or right timing.” A third source reiterated that it was “a mutual breakup and they are still friendly.”
Kim Kardashian & Kanye West

TMZ reported in February 2021 that Kim had filed for divorce from Kanye after seven years of marriage. The site reported that Kim asked for joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s four children: North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm. According to TMZ, Kanye was fine with the agreement, and the two have a co-parenting plan in place. E! News reported in February 2021 that Benson and G-Eazy had split after less than a year of dating. The news came after Benson unfollowed G-Eazy on Instagram. The two dated since April 2020 when they collaborated on a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.” Their relationship came amid news that Benson had broken up with her ex-girlfriend, Cara Delevingne. Benson and G-Eazy’s split also came a couple weeks after G-Eazy’s ex-girlfriend, Halsey, announced that she’s pregnant with her first child.
Rebel Wilson & Jacob Busch

Wilson confirmed that she and her boyfriend, Jacob Busch, had split in an Instagram post in February 2021 where she referred herself as a “single girl.” “Lots on my mind…aghhhhhh…#single-girl-heading-to-Super-Bowl!” she captioned a photo of her in a yellow dress. A source told People in January 2021 that de Armas and Affleck split due to their different lifestyles. “Ben is no longer dating Ana,” the insider said. “She broke it off. Their relationship was complicated. Ana doesn’t want to be Los Angeles based and Ben obviously has to since his kids live in Los Angeles.”

In an Instagram post in January 2021, Justine confirmed that she and Caleb had split three months after winning Love Island USA season 2. The two were the first Black couple to win the franchise. “It’s truly a strange feeling to be typing this out but I understand my reality is now having to share some aspects of my life with you all regardless of how private I’d like to remain at times,” she wrote. “This is extremely difficult for me to express, but out of respect for those of you who supported me, and rode for me, I want you to know that Caleb and I are no longer together.”

Kravitz filed for divorce in the last week of 2019, but her divorce was the first celebrity breakup reported on in 2021. People reported in January 2021 that Kravitz had filed for divorce from husband, Karl Glusman, after 18 months of marriage. She filed for divorce on December 23, 2019, and a rep for Kravitz confirmed the split. After news broke about her divorce, Kravitz shared a meme on her Instagram Story that seemed to be shade toward her ex-husband. The meme was of a drag queen throwing a bag of trash into a dumpster. On the bag was: “People places and things that no longer serve my greatest and highest good.” Kravitz captioned the photo with: “Mood.”
Love Island‘s Cely Vazquez & Johnny Middlebrooks

Less than a year after they placed second on season 2 of Love Island USA, Cely and Johnny announced they had broken up in January 2021. Cely took to her Twitter to confirm that the split was a mutual decision. “Because you’ve all been such a close part of our relationship, I wanted to share with you that Johnny and I are no longer together,” she wrote. “While our relationship has been public from the start, I do ask that you respect this decision and our privacy during this time. Us Weekly reported in January 2021 that Labeouf and Qualley had split. The two starred in Qualley’s sister Rainey’s music video for “Love Me Like You Hate Me.” Their breakup came after Labeous’ ex-girlfriend, FKA Twigs, sued him and accused him of “relentless abuse,” including sexual batter, assault and emotional stress. In a statement to The New York Times at the time, Labeouf denied the claims, stating that “many of these allegations are not true.”
