From the moment that she announced her engagement to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has hinted that she plans to pay tribute to her fiancé’s late mom, Princess Diana, on her wedding day. “It’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us,” she told BBC in a post-engagement interview.
And though there has been a lot of rumors about what Markle’s wedding tribute will be (the word is still out on whether she will wear Princess Diana’s museum-safe tiara), we at least know that the 36-year-old duchess-to-be will pay tribute to the beloved royal in one special way: her flowers.
Recently, Kensington Palace announced that London-based floral designer Phillippa Craddock will be creating the floral arrangements for Harry and Markle’s wedding. Per the palace’s official announcement, Craddock will use “locally sourced foliage” from gardens and parks in The Crown Estate and Windsor Great Par to decorate St. George’s Chapel and St. George’s Hall. The announcement also explained that Craddock will stick primarily to plants and flowers that are in bloom in May, such as beech, birch, hornbeam, white garden roses, peonies, and foxgloves.
Though using local, in-bloom flowers is nothing new, what really caught the attention of royal fans is one special, particular flower that she plans on highlighting in her wedding: white garden roses. If you recall, white garden roses were the primary flower that Princess Diana’s wedding bouquet was made of when she married Prince Charles in 1981. Though it’s unclear if Markle will include white garden roses in her own bouquet or just as decoration, the significance isn’t lost on royal historians.

As for other ways that Markle might pay tribute to on her wedding, royal experts for the Daily Mail report that Markle will nod to Harry’s mom with her tiara. Experts predict that Markle will wear the royal family’s Spencer tiara, a jewel-encrusted crown that Princess Diana wore on her wedding. This is all depending on if the exhibition that is currently displaying the crowd decides to loan it to Markle on her wedding day.

Though we don’t know too much about Harry and Markle’s wedding on May 19, it’s clear that Markle has a special place in her heart for Princess Diana, even before she ran in royal circles. According to Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, a book written by Princess Diana’s biographer, Andrew Morton, the “Suits” actress considered Princess Diana a “role a model” as a teenager after reading her biography. Morton reports that Markle was so inspired by Diana, that she collected toys and clothes to donate after she learned of Diana’s philanthropy.
“[Markle] was intrigued by Diana not just for her style but also for her independent humanitarian mission. She saw her as a role mode,” Morton wrote.
We’ll keep an eye out to see if Markle pays tribute to Princess Di in any other ways.
