Thanks to nearlye very single 2020 Fashion Week runway, there are a ton of 2020 hat trends to try out—from major statements like cowboy hats and turbans to more low-key, wearable picks like berets and bucket hats. (Yes, I said bucket hats. They made it all the way to Fashion Week! Can you believe?) And now that many of us—including all your favorite retailers—have started prepping for fall, there’s no better time than now to start stocking up on all the gorgeous hats available right now.
ICYMI, statement-making toppers were all over the biggest runways, from LaQuan Smith to Christian Siriano to Marc Jacobs. And while the designers paired them with equally gorgeous attire, it’s no secret that a hat can jazz up an otherwise basic look, too. If you’re stuck in a boring-top-and-jeans rut, consider investing in a new hat (Or two, or three…) and see just how quickly it elevates your look. Bags, sunglasses and jewelry may have reigned in the past, but this year, it’s all about the hat. Read on for the biggest hat trends of the year, plus a few options you’ll want to Add to Cart.
1. Berets

We love a little Parisian flair! Models at the Libertine, Marc Jacobs, Zimmerman, and Christian Cowan Fall/Winter 2020 shows donned all types of berets, from floppy to structured to leather daddy chic. Spoiler alert: You don’t need to book a trip to France to copy this look ASAP.
Chapeau.
If you’re a self-identified minimalist, you can’t go wrong with a classic black wool beret for all your Parisian-inspired ensemble needs.

2. Cowboy Hats

When I saw these cowboy hats coming down the runway at Chiara Boni’s Spring/Summer 2020 show, I knew right then and there I’d be rocking this look to the tune of “Old Town Road” all year long. Try and stop me.

If you’re going for a subtle cowboy hat look, this Billie Rancher Hat is a seriously chic option for fall. It has just the right amount of cowboy details.

3. Bucket Hats

Bucket hats started gaining popularity in fall and winter of 2019, but Elie Tahari’s Spring/Summer 2020 show confirmed that they’ll remain cool throughout all of 2020, too. The best part about bucket hats is that they low-key go with everything. Need proof? Rock the Adidas logo’ed hat above with a street style ensemble, the leopard-print R13 version below with an LBD, and the fuzzy bucket hat with a turtleneck and high-waisted denim.

I truly never thought I’d want to wear anything even remotely similar to a tophat, but Christian Siriano’s Fall/Winter 2020 show changed my mind. Models wore flat-topped, ultra-wide-brim hats in the same fabrics as their luxe gowns, and while I don’t have many a gown in my future, I might have to have a few wide brim hats. It’s safe to say I won’t be rocking such dramatic styles IRL, but there are certainly some toned-down versions worth trying.
Lack of Color.
A dark brown wide-brim hat is truly perfect for fall, and I can’t stop staring at this beauty from Lack of Color.

In addition to black and dark brown, you might consider adding a fun red wide-brim hat to your collection. It could be the unexpected pop of color your fall and winter looks need.
5. Fashion Turbans
Charm.
The ultimate cool-girl hat trend to try this year is the turban, as spotted at L’Agence and Libertine’s Fall/Winter 2020 shows. While one model at L’Agence rocked the gold lamé version of my wildest dreams, models at Libertine paired colorful, almost graffiti-patterned turbans with matching scarves around their necks. Dreamy.
Babeyond.
If you want a fashion turban that makes a major statement, opt for this crystal brooch-adorned option from Babeyond this season. Bling bling, baby.
SILKE London.
Of course, you can’t go wrong with a fall-ready yellow fashion turban this season. This silky beauty is sure to complement all your autumn looks.
6. Faux Fur

I’ve been a longtime lover of faux fur coats, but LaQuan Smith’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection introduced me to faux fur accessories, and honey, I’m hooked. As far as cold winters go, faux fur hats is a great trend to try, but I have a feeling I’ll be experiencing a few additional sweaty-headed days in the name of rocking this trend year-round. Judge me not.
Kangol.
Treat yourself to the ideal combination of the faux fur hat and bucket hat trends with this furry animal print iteration from Kangol.
Brixton.
If you’re not into animal prints, though, you can always opt for a simple black faux fur hat to wear all fall and winter long.
7. Baseball Caps
Urban Outfitters.
I’ve never really considered baseball caps interesting enough to become a trend, but after seeing how designers like Each x Other, Leonard Paris and Marine Serre elevated the trend and made it runway-ready, I’m changing my tune. You can go for a bit of a masculine flare or something totally maximalist and fun. It’s up to you, but this is hat trend that works for all seasons.

This satin-lined baseball hat was created to keep you from getting hat hair—and for that, I’m ridiculously grateful.
Rag & Bone.
If you want to snag a version of the trend that’s a bit elevated, go for this gorgeous suede baseball cap from Rag & Bone. It’s a little pricey, but so worth it.
8. Headscarves

Are they scarves or are they hats? Technically, they’re both—and headscarves were all over the 2020 runways. Fendi, Marc Jacobs and Libertine all featured elegant (but also seriously cool) head wraps in their shows, and the trend has officially made its way into all the cutest accessories collections. Pro tip: You can wear these headscarves as bandanas and around your neck, too.

Go for a bold fall-ready pattern this season and watch the compliments pour in. These colors are just too gorgeous.
SATINIOR.
Of course, you can always opt for a fun solid color, too. This pretty pink is sure to pair well with so many of your favorite ensembles.
9. Embellished Hats

Last but not least, a trend with which your imagination can run wild. Christian Cowan’s Fall/Winter 2020 show featured the most luxurious gem-coated caps, and they were pretty much as close to an everyday tiara as one could hope for. Sadly, there’s nothing quite like it on the market right now, so if the bedazzled options here don’t suit you, you might have to grab a glue gun and DIY yourself something similar.
