Efron and Sage met in 2013 on the set of the film Neighbors. After the film was released in 2014, the two dated for three months from April to July 2014. Five years later, the two reunited at the end of 2019. News broke of their new relationship in January 2020 when Us Weekly reported that Efron had moved on from his then-girlfriend, Danish swimmer Sarah Bro, and was now in a relationship with Sage.

A source told Us Weekly at the time that Efron and Sage were in a “serious relationship and in love” and even spent the holidays together with their families. “They spent the holidays together, with part of that time in Santa Barbara,” the source said.
